I pretty much grew up in wet suits. I have worn nothing, Speedo type suits and board shorts - not all at the same time :-) It pretty much depends on the situation and the suit. Surfers generally go commando and do the street dance getting in and out of the suit. They wear thinner one piece suits that can be quickly changed into and out of under a towel. When you get to the thicker diving type suits they will often be so constricting as to require a Houdini straight jacket type contortionist struggle that a towel around the waist will simply not conceal. Board shorts can be a pain when the legs roll up and bunch when you are pulling on the suit. With a bit of effort you can get your hand under the wet suit and straighten things back out so that everything is once again hunky dory. The Lycra suits are easier, but not everyone is comfortable parading around in skin tight shorts. Wearing nothing at all underneath your new wetsuit is the simplest by far but the most difficult to get into and out of in public with some discretion. So the bottom line here is that it's pretty much up to you.
