I live about an hour south of Lake Superior in NE WI, and have several large
lakes in my "back yard." I weigh 280 + and am a proficient canoeist. Before
Spring I would like to buy a Kayak which can be used on both Superior and in
my back yard. To date the Eddyline Night Hawk 17.5 is the only boat, I've seen
which seems to work. Are there any other suggestions? $2300 is pushing the
budget.

Also, I am looking for a WI or MN Source with a wide selection.

Thanks

I'm 6'8", 250 lbs and paddle what most would consider an entry level boat
(plastic to boot!) - a Current Designs Storm. The only mods I needed to
make were for my long legs. You'll want to visit Wes Boyd's website for
some real solid info and boat reviews for those of us "big boys":

Check out this web site (Wes Boyd's)...

http://my.dmci.net/~wesboyd/kt26-00.htm

Wes is a Paddlewiser and has info on his site about large paddlers. You
may find some helpful info there.

You should check out the Necky Tesla. It is 25" wide, 18' long, and has lots
of leg room and lots of storage space in the 2 hatches. I am 5'11" and weigh
200 lbs, and the boat is actually much bigger than I need, but I have been very
happy with it. The price is in line with your budget, and I'm sure a used one
could be had for much less.

Have you also considered building your own? There are kits and plans
available for a wide variety of boat designs and construction methods.
If you already have the tools and work space, you can build a very
nice, customized boat at a very reasonable cost. Not only would you
have a very nice boat, you'd have the satisfaction of having built it
yourself.

If you don't want to build your own, and want to get the most for your
money, do consider finding a good used boat. Most people take pretty
good care of their boats, and if they sell them, it's usually because
they need to make more space for a different boat...not because
there's something terribly wrong with the one they're selling. I
mention this, because in the realm of new, commercially built
composite boats, it might be very difficult to find good new boat for
$2300 or less.

A Valley Canoe Products Argonaut might be good for you. It's a high-volume, high performance boat that is meant for heavier-bigger paddlers and/or expedition paddling. See http://www.atlantickayaktours.com/Pages/Retail/Boats/VCP/Argonaut.shtml
for a description, photos (deck and side views), and specs.

The Valley dealer closest to you is probably Great River Outfitters:

With the boat being only 22" wide it might be a tad tight. If you like the CD
boats then try the Sirocco. That is the plastic version of the Gulfstream. The
Sirocco is 23 1/2" and the GS is 23 1/4" wide. That inch and a half makes a
world of difference. Current Designs makes great boats, as you already know.
The Sirocco is not nearly as hard tracking as the GS. With the skeg down the
GS will go through most challenges. The Sirocco asks for a bit more work but
is a lot more fun.

Have you looked at a Current Designs Solstice GT HV or Boreal? I am a
230#,6'2" paddler and I paddle a Current Designs, Solstice GT which
sometimes I find tight and have thought of going up a size to a GT HV! I
sat in a HV which seemed big for me but did not have a chance to paddle one,
which I may try someday! Overall, I am quite satisfied with my GT!
Also, you might, check out Boreal Designs! I paddled a Narwal which I fit
into very easy but found a little short at 16'. I actually enjoyed the
Narwal, very stable and easy to paddle and the first kayak I ever paddled.
If I can elaborate, I felt so comfortable while paddling in Lake George that
hot July or August day, just inside a large bay that I took my feet off the
pegs, laid the paddle down, crossed my legs and sat back to enjoy the sun on
my face the view and the new peace I had found in kayaking! Which lasted
just about as long as it took me to type this or maybe shorter! I was broad
side by a 1'1/2 or so wave, capsized, watched my $200 glasses sink to the
bottom, which I tried to retrieve and ended up giving up trying to get back
in and accepted help from a passing power boat, who I am grateful to!
The lessons I learned that day!!!
Oh, did I say Power Boat this was a entrance way to a marina or should I say
a lot of marina's! There were so many powerboats you'd think they had a
sale! What was I thinking!
I just wanted to share, for the humor of it all!

There Nanook looks a little bigger at 17'8'', with a 24 1/4" beam

The Current Designs GT HV may pass your $2300 budget but maybe not!
I purchase my Solstice GT from Mountainmanoutdoors in Inlet NY, so I checked
to see what they had! They're selling one new 2003 fiberglass, red with
rudder for $2,270.00 and 1 kevlar for $2644.00. So you just might find one
in your area under your budget, if you like the kayak!
Also, they offer Boreal Designs and it looks like you could pick up a kevlar
under your budget!

I am not affiliated with any company..
Happy paddling!
Bill Doody

Actually there are several dealers much closer--come on down to Canoecopia,
I'm sure there will be many boats for you to sit in and find out what fits, and
what doesn't.

For info about Canoecopia (<A
