I'm leading an over night trip to circumnavigate Galiano Island in the Canadian Gulf Islands of British Columbia this weekend and I've developed what I suspect is commonly referred to as tennis elbow. During the trip I'll have to paddle about 36 miles in total including two potentially difficult passes with tide rips, whirlpools and strong currents. On a 12 mile paddle last Sunday, by the time I was half way through the trip, the elbow was giving me enough problems that my forward stroke was seriously affected. If anyone has any experience with this type of injury and specific suggestions on how to deal with the injury I'd like to hear from you. I'm hoping someone might share some hints that will get me through the weekend. I'll start to rehab the injury when I return. I'm thinking a tensor bandage may help. Feel free to contact me back channel if you wish. G'Day Gordin, I'm not sure if this is the same as tennis elbow but for some years ago I developed a very stiff, slightly painful, elbow on my right arm. The cause was some combination of: - excessive sweep strokes (instead of edging the boat), poor computer ergonomics (important contribution as I'm a desk worker) and too tight a grip on the paddle. I fixed all the above and also went to a kayaking physiotherapist who provided some simple exercises which completely cured this problem and some shoulder problems. The exercises are a bit hard to describe but I thoroughly recommend finding a physio who knows about tennis elbow. All the best, PeterO *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s). I would like to see one in Seattle, and they must be here! I went to the UW Sports Med clinic to discuss my sometimes-aching wrists, and they gave me someone who worked with rowers. Close but not quite. The advice may have helped some, but I really haven't been paddling enough to be sure. Also developed a right-elbow pain last year, but it was after a hard paddle straight across the lake and back in totally calm conditions, so virtually no sweep strokes involved! I've never figured out what was different. Maybe just due to a big effort after a bit of a layoff. It comes back pretty easily now. I'm not even 40 yet. I was hoping to solve one problem before the next arose! I've never heard of one here in Vancouver BC as well. Though I strongly suspect that BC medical science and healthcare are not the most advanced. *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s).
