Not so far fetched.  If I take my Maas Aero rowing shell out in a regatta it
must be (and is) equipped with a "bow ball".  Of course, no open-water
sculler would be caught dead or alive wearing a PFD or wetsuit or drysuit.
Different strokes for different strokes, I guess.
