Hi all,

In just a week, I am leaving to explore Kyuquot Sound on the West Coast of
Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada. Together with my son, we are
going to paddle our Libra XT double made by local company Current Designs. If
anyone has visited that area before, I would love to hear about your
impressions.

Also, I am thinking about trying to catch a few shrimps for dinner while on the
trip. What is left is to figure out how to accomplish that. According to my
friend, it is possible to make a shrimp trap from a plastic bucket; however, I
was not able to find out exactly how. If you happen to know how to catch a
shrimp with some kind of portable trap, please share!

Cheers,

Victor

Around here we use a throw net. Takes a while to get the motion down.

It's hard to tell how far your and your son could go, speaking of time
available and skills (and, who knows, weather too). Check this link -
http://wlapwww.gov.bc.ca/bcparks/ --> Search by geographical location.
Wherever is a park, it's a gurantee of landing and camping spot. Unlikely
you'll be exploring these shore alone on a weekend, especially if campsite
is particularly nice. Expect to share it with 1 or 2 kayaking groups.
I have some doubts in shrimp dinner, unless you buy them in Safeway before
leaving. But then you'll need a cooler, so I would rather opt for canned
meat, dry frutis etc :-). Check tidal tables for this area - tides magnitude
is ubnormal this year. I've heard some fog is expected in the next couple of
days in Vancouver area.

Thank you for all your responses!

I'd like to summarize my findings on the subject of shrimping while kayaking on
the Pacific North-West:

1. One the Pacific coast of Canada, the shrimps are not present. Instead, we
have prawns, which are deeper water creatures (80-200 ft).

2. The recreational prawn harvesting is open all year round:
http://www-comm.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/pages/sfg/tables/shelltable_e.htm

3. Locals are actually catching the prawns all year round.

4. BC Tidal Waters Sport Fishing License is required for prawn harvesting. This
is the same license as for the sport fishing. It is available for $22.47 and
$108.07 for BC residents and non-residents respectively:
http://www-comm.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/pages/sfg/licences_e.htm

5. A local BC company makes folding stainless prawn traps that are 12"x12" when
folded flat. They sell them via the distributors, not directly. The price is
around CDN $50. E-mail me for the link for it is against the list policy to
post it here.

I am definitely going to give it a try. I'll post the results when I am back
from my trip in September.

Cheers,

Victor.

It is not against the policy, as long as you make no profit on it and have
no affiliation with manufacturer. On the other hand, it might contravene
the policy, being addictive, speaking of both gourmet niceties and the very
process of catching it. But then fishing is an addiction as well :-)...
Not to mention such anti-social and eremitical activity, as kayaking ...
