I have done a few week long 300 mile challenges (watertribe) and always end
up with serious lip damage from the sun (and wind?).

Sun screen and lip balms have not solved the problem. The best I have done
is to keep a glob of Zinc Sulfate Cream on my nose and constantly re-apply
the ointment. I have tried different versions of this, but they all wear off
when drinking and eating while paddling.

Anyone have any better tips!

I saw a comparison show once on women's lip stick and they claimed to be
able to wear if for many hours of eating, drinking and kissing. If only it
had an SPF rating; and I knew what brands they even compared I would try
it!!!

Appreciate any thoughts.

A big moustache goes a long way to working as a sun screen! Since trimming
mine I have re-discovered peeling lips :-)

Only half joking.

Yes, from wind too. I've got it once after paddling in wind and wihtout
much sun. Dehydration of skin is the main factor, so if you drink and wet
your lips often this shouldn't happen.
Somebody has suggested Carmex (probalby http://www.carmex.com) . It exists
in jars and lipstick versions, and with or without SPF. I've bought the one
with SPF15 (good enough for Britich Columbia). So far I'm happy with it -
it stays put after the first drink or snack, but you'd better reapply it
after eating or every 20-40 minutes depending on your skin. Taste is
tolerable, and it is transparent, not visible on lips. Pretty small and
convenient as a lipstick, I keep it in a PFD pocket. It is a lip balm, but
with a sunblock too.

PS: trimming mustache or beard is a bad idea in wilderness, btw. Skin on
shaved areas becomes slightly irritated afterwards, and wind/sun will result
in peeling or skin rush very soon. For the similar reason washing your face
too thoroughly could be a bad idea in mountains or southern latitudes with a
lot of UV: protective layer of grease is washed away. Hygiene is a
guideline, not a dogma.
