G'Day,

I was very taken by the name Ian Dewey gave his boat - see Ian's Who's Who
entry.

Years ago we had a discussion on boat names - wondered if their were any new
ones around since then?

All the best, PeterO

I'm not one for naming my kayaks but if I bulld another wood kayak I'm
tempted to name it "Sportin' Wood".

My current favorite name is Michael Silvius's "El Chupacabras"

Since then, I built the Outer Island strip built boat designed by Jay
Babina. I named it "Isabel."

I was well into the construction in 2003 when we got hit by hurricane
Isabel. My house flooded. At the time, the boat was in the garage, and
it got it's first taste of salt water when it was lifted off the cradle
used during construction. Although it went thru the hurricane and was
flooded, it floated and was not otherwise hurt in any fashion. It had
been glassed inside and out, so all I had to do before continuing
construction was to rinse it off (well, that and tens of thousands of
dollars of home repairs and disaster recovery, but we won't go into that
right now).

Anyway, in honor of the hurricane launching her and otherwise not
hurting her, I felt obligated to name it in her honor. It doesn't
appear "on" the boat anywhere, but I refer to her as "Isabel.

I call my boat the Lollygagger, a sad commentary on my paddling style.

I refer to my red Folbot Kodiak, which is so extensively modified that it has
only token resemblance to a stock model ... "Frankenboat."

Dave,

Your note made me laugh. "Frankenboat" is the name now
being given to Chris Duff's boat, the one he took
around New Zealand's South Island which is described
in his book "Southern Exposure". I had a chance to
paddle that boat, a bit. It still handles well, but
Chris told me the boat had been so badly damaged by a
bad surf landing during the trip that he could
literally fold the stern over the bow. The cockpit had
been virtually torn out. It's been repaired of course,
but you can see how much damage had been done. Yet
it's continues to be Chris' favorite boat. Now that's
loyalty.

Ah Kirk but I was merely pilfering a bit of cultural mithos.
blame the beer for the creativity!!!!
I have some notions on a couple of sequels.
The next one in the production line will be named
El Cucui, in caribean lore the Boogey man.
and the one after will be:
El Sacerdote, Spanish for The Priest.
kind of like a cheap thriller novel.
El Chupacabras, El Cucui y El Sacerdote.
( The Goatsucker, the Boogey man and the Priest.)
North American mythos seems so tame in comparison.
Oversized hairy apes???? they can't hold a candle to the critters.
:-)
best: Michael
