Picking up on the theme of kayakers [ outdoors people ] being kicked around
by officious folks in uniforms, I well remember reading about the kayakers
off the coast of CA, San Francisco ? who tangled with a large shark, possibly
a white pointer near a seal colony some years back.
The group made it to shore, one with a kayak bearing the marks of the white
pointer attack, only to be reprimanded by a 'ranger' for unauthorised landing
in a nature reserve! Apparently the ranger was unimpressed when shown the
evidence to back up their scary encounter.
That is when I decided, as a non-American, that something is definitely
strange in the land of the free.

One of the most irritating signs I have seen is one at the Blaine,
Washington (state) border crossing down from British Columbia. It reads: Welcome To
America Land Of The Free. It's as if I left Sudan or Cuba. Paddling content: I
had a pair of kayaks on the roof at the time.

I remember when one of the people in that paddling group posted the
story to rec.boats.paddle.

Should be the story, the beginning of the post looks right, 1982 seems
right too...

Let's also recall the incident in which multi-time US champion, multi-time
world champion, multi-time Olympian and generally really good paddler
and nice guy David Hearn was forcibly ripped out of his C-1 because some
thugs with uniforms decided that the Potomac was "too high" to be safe.

(Yeah, for someone like *me*, it probably was. But for someone of
Davey's incredible skill and experience, it's a playground.)

...some thugs with uniforms who did not have any authority over the
river and who uses it...
