hey gang,
Back in January I posted that I was heading to Florida for business and
pleasure. I mentioned I was planning to spend a couple of days paddling down
the Suwanee and was wondering about taking my own paddle since I feared what
the outfitter might hand me for a paddle. You folks made some good suggestions
about some gun cases that could double as paddle cases but I was not able to
find one in my small Alaskan town before I left so I left my beloved wooden
paddle behind. Also Alaska Airlines only allows two checked bags and between
dress clothes for my conferences and camping gear I already had two bags.
BIG MISTAKE! Despite the fact the outfitter sold some decent padles. The
outfitter handed me two paddles. The first was a heavy retangle bladed Carlyle
that had a jammed ferule. Stuck in the unfeathered position I wasn't about to
use it.(something about old dogs and new tricks)
The other I could not find a brand name on but it was a vynl covered
aliumum shaft black monstrosity. The plastic blades were a poor attempt at
being asymetrical.
To make a long story short the bad paddle screwed up my shoulder for a week or
two. I was on the river 3 days and paddled about 50 miles. For at least two
weeks afterwards my left shoulder was stiff and ached. It is back to normal
now but I did learn my lesson.
Next time I am taking my own paddle.
thanks for the advice and I am sorry I did not listen

happy paddling

Bob
