Does anyone have any experience with the Pentax Optio WP digital camera? It
is rated as a JIS class 8. It has 5 megapixels and it can shoot images for 30
minutes at a depth of 1.5 meters.

If you don't mind, any digi camera advocates can recommend their preferred
camera I would appreciate it.

Thanks,

Rob G

I have been eyeing the camera myself too, and will mail order it when I can.
A forum on dpreviews have been talking about it on and off here at
http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/forum.asp?forum=1028, do a search and you
can find threads where people talk tech about its srengths and weaknesses
even before it was released. You can read a full review of it at this UK
website http://www.trustedreviews.com/article.aspx?art=1226 here. Generally,
$349 seems a reasonable price for it online, check out eBay perhaps for some
interesting deals.

Hi,

I opted for the Canon pwershot S1 IS with dive
case. The good side is the image stabilizer, the
down side is that it's really bulky in the case.
The other great feature of the Canon is that I can
shoot some decent video as well. For what it's
worth this is another option as well.

Hi,

I have two digital cameras, and while one of them costed me five
times more than the other, I heartily recommend the cheaper,
which now is available in an updated version.

It is now called Konica Minolta G-600, by the way.

It's colours are amazing, especially if you under-expose a little
and then reset the exposure in Photoshop with levels.

With 1.5 steps underexposing the colours are vibrant
and as true as you can get!

The more expensive I have is an Olympus C-8080WZ
and it is a very nice camera in the studio, and have
heaps of features, but it isn't very good outdoors!

I keep my Konica in a bag, made from a cotton trouser leg.
It has a neckstrap which I use to carry it around on shore,
but when at sea, I keep all of it in a watertight camera bag.

The trousers leg sucks up any humidity and by carrying
it around my neck when on shore it dries out very effectively.

Not pretty, but effective!

The camera is not even water-resistant, but till now I have
not had any problem!

The quality of the photos can be seen here (all outdoor,
and most others):

www.foldingkayaks.org/gallery/tord

Not ideal for studio work, but outdoor, my!

Does it have an optical zoom, by the way? The specs I found only listed
a 3x digital zoom.

For those of us who are a little curious, do you have a photo of
yourself with a trouser leg strapped to your neck? 8-)

It has 3 x optical zoom (and it has digital, too, which I never use).

Sadly no, but it just looks like a black pouch, like those
some carry their diamonds in (at least some do that
in movies).

Very, very sturdy - some guy forgot his (KD-500Z, as it
was called then) on the roof of his car, and it fell off at
high speed. Just minor scratches!

A good, honest, review here, by the way:

Street price less than $300!

Yes, the Optio WP has a 3x optical plus a 4x digital zoom. Your question
worried me because I just ordered one. I checked my downloaded copy of the
camera manual and it clearly specifies the 3x optical zoom. You can get the
manual at pentaxusa.com.

As other posters have said, digital zooom is essentially worthless. You can do
the same thing by cropping the image in the computer.

I opted for semi-cheap for a paddling digital. Went with the Canon
A85. Picked up the camera for $180 and the waterproof housing for about
$150. Housing gives you FULL control. Camera does video with sound if you
want that. Has gotten good solid reviews. Runs on AA batteries - which
everything I paddle with does so that was important to me not to have to
haul another battery type and charger along. Will allow shutter speeds
down to 15 seconds - which is important for me for shooting fun shots after
dark with headlamps and creative lighting (full moon (planetary type) over
the tent kind of pics and also things like the aurora borealis). A bit
bulky in the case but not a problem for me

I don't have a Pentax Optio WP but am curious to know what the power source
is for the camera and how long it works off the battery source.

Some of the digital cameras my friends use eat batteries at the same rate
my 14 year old son eats though our fridge. I swear he can open the fridge
door and clean out everything edible before the light comes on. By evening
the only thing left in the fridge is some science experiments and the
organic green sludge in the vegetable crisper.

Why's it called a crisper? You put fresh vegies in and "poof" they turn to
sludge. It should be called the sludger.

Sorry, I lost focus there for a moment.

About the batteries, what's the power source for the Optio WP? Oh, and
would you pass the green sludge?
