I am a co-owner of a management search company, a kayaker for ten years and
a reader of this group for four years.

I recently presented a candidate on a global Chief Marketing Officer job
that I am working on. The person was partially rejected because they had
spent a few not-too-distant years in the canoe/kayak industry. The bias was
that the industry group is "small potatoes". My first reaction was to
respond emotionally. The second was to shut up get some hard facts. Do any
of you folks out there have figures as to the magnitude of this business, or
an association that would have numbers. Too late to save this candidate, but
I would like to satisfy my own curiosity.

Best Regards,

Tony Reynes

Web address disn't come out well; it should be dialed up to and including
ular&id=373985& at the end of the line. Don't know why Outlook Express
works this way (and it sent the message before I could edit it - remove the
header etc). Bill Gates should be blaimed.

The American Canoe Association should be able to provide information as to the size and impact of this segment of business. It is not just canoes and kayak sells but also the things associated with them. You have accessories, tourism, competitive events, schools, and the list goes on. It is not small potatoes. I do not know why we can't get a Tour De Bayou going to compete with the Tour De France! -------Chris Mixon

Hi Tony - I pay attention to paddlesports industry stats as part of my job,
and the business is, in fact, small potatoes. A marketing company called
Leisure Trends has started tracking paddlesports sales for the Outdoor
Industry Association in the last couple of years -- and annual retail sales
have been between $265 and $300 million.

The latest report I got from them said that in Aug. 04-Feb. 05, paddlesports
accounted for 3 percent of the $3.6 billion in outdoor-recreation sales, or
about $108 million for the six-month period.

What they are tracking is retail sales through specialty shops, outdoor
chains such as REI and MEC, and just this year they are tracking catalog and
internet sales. I don't think it necessarily includes all the boats sold
through places like Costco and Walmart.

In contrast, the Winter Sports Retail Audit showed sales of about $2 Billion
in the Aug 04 to Feb 05 period.

If you want to go deeper into this, the Outdoor Industry Association is a
good place to look - wwwoutdoorindustry.org -- look at their "research" page
for studies on sales and on recreation participation. Some reports are
limited to members only.

Or Leisure Trends - www.leisuretrends.com - if you want to know more about
them.

Sales rose 11% to $11.9 million in the first quarter, as sales grew in all
components of the segment, particularly Pacific Kayak and the combined
Ocean/Necky Kayak operations.

Necky isn't a top-seller, though. Try and find financial statements for
Perception or Wilderness Systems.
