Hey, my fellow Paddlewisers, one and all........

I am seeking some objective comments/recommendations. I recently had a few
hours in a Tsunami 16.5 and was quite impressed by the boat, though I never
had the opportunity to get it into any gnarly water. I know part of the
reason for my good impression was the "Phase 3" seat, which felt good
immediately and continued to feel good the whole time. I'd appreciate your
considered opinions, however, on other characteristics of the Tsunami 16.5 or
the 17. and of the "Gen 2" lay-ups.

I have paddled in a Tsunami 16.5.. I'm not
particularly a fan. The wide flat hull shape gives
the boat a very sedate barge-feel. The hatch covers
on WS boats have a poor seal. After roll practice
there is almost always water in *all* compartments.
In rental fleet boats, I've seen problems with broken
backband straps.

The seat is definitely a strength in WS boats. I'm
not sure that this should be your primary basis for
boat selection. If you are a WS fan, you might also
consider taking a Tempest out for a test paddle. It
has the same issues as the Tsunami, but it is slightly
more lively.

Derek,
Interesting that you mention this. Yesterday I was in a kayak shop where one
of the customers had just come back from a paddle the day before. He was n a
WS Tsunami paddling a FL river with some moderate current. He got tangled in
a tree and dumped. Once he got himself extricated and back into his boat he
had not realized that the entire front hatch had filled with water and could
not understand why his boat would not turn. He subsequently dumped again. He
wrote this event rather casually that the water was rushing by the pinned
boat and of course it would force itself under the hatch.
