Hello

Does anyone have any thoughts on the strengths and
weaknesses of a cover like this? It would be ideal
for outdoor storage purposes.

A Tyvek cover might be good for protecting a kayak while traveling with it on
the roof of your vehicle (though the ad does not recommend it), I wouldn't be
too keen on using it for storage. The idea of using a material that lets rain
in and then feel good about the fact that it breathes to let the rain back out
just seems dumb (My roof leaks but so does my floor so the rain doesn't stick
around!).

I've used Tyvek for a bunch of stuff (got a big roll at a garage sale for $4)
and it isn't particularly durable. I know there are different grades of Tyvek,
but poly tarps are cheaper and more durable than Tyvek for this purpose.

For long term storage, I'd rather use a waterproof material that is held off the
kayak to allow full air circulation.

Derek and all,
First I have 2 of Dave's covers that I bought on E-bay, and I am very
pleased with both of them. Very well made, fit well, etc. they have done
well for about 3 months in the Florida summer sun. I did have to put a
couple of drain holes in the bottom, since water tends to pool (they hang on
a fence outside in the rain), but all in all I'd buy them again. (No
affiliation or anything).
As for marking gear, a company called Trident makes both a marking pen
that works well and doesn't wash off in salt water very quickly, and marking
paint (looks like that craft glue/paint you see sometimes, but waaay more
durable). Comes in many colors and after a long time, still shows up well. I
use the stuff to mark all kinds of things. (Again no affiliation and YMMV)

Best,
Sluf

I've got 4 canoe/kayak covers.

3 are canoe covers from "the bag lady", they've held up very well
http://www.waterworkscanoe.com/the_bag_lady.htm

I had a Dakine cover for my previous surf ski, it was made out of terry
cloth. It was very protective but snagged easily and ended up with a
tear.

I've got a zippered cover for my current boat which has a woven grey
exterior (reminds me of thick tyvek) with a cloth padded lining. The
bag is a smidge short and the cloth is starting to separate where I pull
it backwards to get the boat into the bag. This bag is holding up well,
other than the stress pull at the stern. I don't know where to get
another one the bag came with the boat from South Africa.

Ocean paddlesports has a couple options, one a drop on cover and a
second pull on cover. I don't know if the pull on bags are wide enough
to fit around all sea kayaks. At $65 they are a much cheaper option
than some of the other covers on the market.
http://www.oceanpaddlesports.com The covers are pictured under
accessories and priced on the price list.
