I am closing in on my 3rd 1000 Nm paddling year. Right now I am at 922 Nm and counting. I started thinking about setting a goal for next year and I kind of like the idea of trying to reach a "notable" milestone. After reading a little about Verlen Kruger, Ed Gillet, Chris Duff, and Steph Dutton it seems to me that 5000 Nm for the year would be a "world class" goal. That is almost certainly more than I am capable of doing.

What kind of yearly mileage would you paddler's out there consider a "notable" accomplishment.

Notable, or "notable for me"?

I don't keep track of distance covered, even though I could probably
do it easily, especially if I used my toes to help count.

I suspect a good year might be somewhere in the 1-200 statute mile
range. (I tend to measure distances either with a GPS that shows
miles or kilometres, or by using a map or a tool like Google Earth,
which also uses land-based measurements.)

I think 1000 NM _is_ a notable achievement. Three years in a row....
well, you have my admiration!

In the interest of full disclosure I must admit that if I make it this year
it will be 3 yrs out of the last 4. A hamstring injury limited me to 639
Nm in 2004. 2003 was the first year that I actually started keeping
track of my yearly mileage.

I am impressed. That is a lot of miles year after year.
Hope you can continue to enjoy every mile

I tried counting dolphins but they just will not stand still and insist on
moving around underwater so I am never sure if I am counting the same one
twice. The spoonbills are easier to count, but the number has gotten so
high that my old computer just does not have the memory to store it any
more. The sea turtles are at 6, the rays at 30 (one group of eagle rays in
Florida and one group of Cow Nose rays in Texas). I was having so much fun
with the manatees in Homosassa Springs that I forgot to count. I can't
remember ever seeing a horseshoe crab while paddling but maybe I was just
paying too much attention to the mileage on the GPS.
