Just announced and looks pretty impressive on specs. Seven megapixel,
big screen, enough features that you'll need to bring a kid along to
explain them to you. Two hour submersion up to 3m.

We'll have to see what the reviewers have to say.

Greetings,
A convention gets me to Myrtle Beach in mid March. I will have my kayak
with me and would like some recommendations for day trips in the area. I
have a copy of A. Bannon's "Sea Kayaking the Carolinas" but first hand info
seems to be the most reliable.
Thanks in advance

G'Day Michael,

As you say looks impressive, particularly the description of the screen.
Noticed the camera has shake reduction but not image stabilisation. Can
anyone explain the difference and compare the performance of each?

All the best, PeterO

I assume they are the same thing and that the marketeers assume people
won't understand "image stabilization" as well as "shake reduction"

Image stabilization seems to imply either the lens or the sensor
moves to eliminate shaking, it sounds like this camera uses digital
processing to eliminate the appearance of shaking. i.e. the sensor
gets an image which includes shake, but it is reduced by post-
processing.

I assumed wrong - as someone pointed out offline. The web page I
pointed you to indicates "Image Stabilization = No".

Reading between the lines in the description of Shake Reduction (SR), it
appears it adjusts the shutter speed/effective ISO# to be faster when
there's a whole lot a' shakin' goin' on. In reviews of digital cameras
I've seen in the past, high ISO settings yield poorer quality images -
effectively grainier IIRC.

Having used a film camera with image stabilization (IS) (Canon SLR), IS
can be a good thing, yielding about a half to a full stop extra exposure
without motion blur in most situations.

SR is no doubt easier to do as it needs no extra moving parts, just a
motion detector (accelerometer - ok, a wiggly part) and some software.
IS (at least in my old Canon) required a motor driven optical widget in
the lens, which sucked down the battery if used too much.

I have the w20 (just got it...) and it is a nice camera - the shake
reduction is not the same as image stabilization - basically what it
does is to crank the ISO sensitivity up higher if needed.
see:

The w30 looks like a small but nice improvement. I have had the
original 33WR for several years and have been very pleased with its
use as a paddling camera. It has rolled with me and been in the surf
several times.

I have the current Pentax W series camera, and while it takes great
pictures (and has survived on my PFD in salt water many times), the view
screen is terrible. This should be a big improvement, but I'd want to
look at one in sunlight to believe it...

*"2.* New LCD monitor that is bright and easily viewable The Optio W30
is equipped with a high-intensity 2.5-inch LCD monitor with an LCD
Bright Mode that can adjust the brightness of the screen as necessary,
making it easy to view the screen even outdoors, where there is strong
sunlight. AR (Anti-Reflection) coating, which controls and reduces
reflections caused by light, is also used for the monitor, making the
screen be even more visible outdoors."

Got one of them for Christmas, so far I am very impress with the results.
the photos are crisp and clear. Never had a chance to try it in the water,
however took it during snow storm and got pretty wet and work just fine.

you can see for yourself some of the photos I took with them, they are all
cropped but not retouched.
