I've done it a few times, to go out to the Kelp beds in Southern
California.  

A few hints - 

Put your wetsuit halfway on before you paddle out.   Finish before
getting in the water. 

Leash EVERYTHING.  I used a couple lengths of rope, with clips on both
ends.   Organize your gear such that it's in the order you'll want to
put it on.  I put on fins first, then my BC, then weight belt, then mask

I use a small dive flag.  Mostly so people don't think the kayak is
abandoned.   I take a small anchor, but hand place on my descent so that
I can minimize impact and make sure it's secure.
