I've done it a few times, to go out to the Kelp beds in Southern California. A few hints - Put your wetsuit halfway on before you paddle out. Finish before getting in the water. Leash EVERYTHING. I used a couple lengths of rope, with clips on both ends. Organize your gear such that it's in the order you'll want to put it on. I put on fins first, then my BC, then weight belt, then mask I use a small dive flag. Mostly so people don't think the kayak is abandoned. I take a small anchor, but hand place on my descent so that I can minimize impact and make sure it's secure.
