REI has the MSR Mutha Hubba tent on sale this weekend for $120 off. It was
Backpacker's 2006 tent of the year. Has anyone used this tent for kayak
camping?

It looks like an improvement on the old North Face Skeeter 23 which i have used on numerous trips to Gulfo de California, kayaking; Sierra Nevada, packpacking; western states rivers, rafting.

Sorry - forgot to remove the original message heading, so it didn't make it
to the list.

My Hubba-Hubba (2005 Tent of the year, but I've bought a 2006 model where
they
added a second door) is technically a 2-person, and this makes it a good
solo
tent. Mutha Hubba looks to me like a larger version of smalller (and much
cheaper) Hubba Hubba. So it makes sense if you need a tent for 2 people
(because it's technically a 3-person tent). Impressions?... 2 doors is
good. Vents are desirable (HH doesn't have
any, but Mutha appears to have - at least it looks like vent on the photo).
All-Mesh design is good in a hot weather, but this material isn't, of
course, as sturdy as non-mesh panels of other MSR tents, so you have to be
careful with it. If you don't need it for very hot weather, or for an
ultralight hiking, get something with less mesh.

Chuck, I'm often a solo sleeper, so I invested in a Hubba. One of my
sometime paddling companions is a long-time Hubba Hubba (aka Mutha Hubba?)
user. She need more room than I do. But, we both swear by our differing
versions of the Hubba, whether to the first power, or squared.

It is a good, lightweight, storm-proof (been there, done that) three-season
tent. I got mine so I could upgrade the thickness of the pad under my
tush, replacing a bulkier, roomier tent under-decks with more sleeping pad.
  Right move.

If you are a solo sleeper, you might consider the Hubba. With a tarp for
kitchen and hanging out in bad weather, the Hubba satisfies all my tent
needs. I only use a tent for sleeping and napping, so why carry a mansion?

Thanks, all, for the replies. My wife and I plan to stop at REI tonight to
give it another look before making up our minds. (We looked at it last
year, too.) At only $280, though, it is hard to pass up.

For Dave Kruger: The Mutha Hubba is the 3-person version of the Hubba
Hubba. Here is the URL:

That is a lot tent for the money; it would not be as wind-sturdy as my
Hubba, but it has enormous room for two.

... too many tents, so little camping ...

Wind-sturdiness was one of our concerns -- our Moss Titan withstood a
50-mph blow soon after we got it, but that was the only time we
encountered such strong winds on Lake Superior. However, the Mutha Hubba
has six extra tabs on the fly for guying it out, and I figure that should
help.

My wife and I bought one Friday night after setting it up in the store and
checking it out. Our other major concern was the color of the fly --
whatever happened to the idea of minimum impact colors? -- but the
advantages outweigh that particular disadvantage. The color is not so
unpleasant from the inside. A friend wandered by while we were looking at
the tent, and he has a similar complaint about his Hubba Hubba. He called
MSR to see if he could get a different color, but no luck.

The tent is amazingly spacious. It feels half again as big as the Titan on
the inside even though it is slightly narrower -- and I have liked
all-mesh tents since I got my Moss Solus 2 years ago. Setup and takedown
is also much easier than with the Titan. The fabric could be tighter on
the vestibules, but that should be a concern only in sustained strong
winds, and I have one or two ideas on what I might be able to do about it.

If we decide not to keep it, I figure we should be able to sell it for
what we paid for it, but for now, we are quite pleased with it, especially
for what we paid for it.
