I thought it was kind of fun trying to analyze my last failed roll strictly from this still snippet of the video. Figured it's quiet enough out there that some of you are bored enough to try it too!!! It may seem obvious, but I'd like to hear how people come to their answer. Maybe back channel so we don't give it away too soon. http://www.sandmarks.net/graphics/BadRoll.jpg Mark Sanders www.sandmarks.net *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s). If its a head mounted camera I would say your head is up too soon. If its a deck mounted camera you need a lower deck. Find a picture of Turner Wilson and place it on a piling next to your kayak. His smoldering eyes will keep you motivated and on track. Always a good result when being taught by Turner. What's the name for Greenland Roll #38? Kodakksanzhandz? I always forget where the accent goes! Of course the ancient Greenlanders only had to learn that roll because they didn't have access to the world famous SandMarks Camera Cradle: http://www.sandmarks.net/caddy.html Who knows how their society might have advanced with this technology! Mark S -----Original Message----- From: Goffma_at_aol.com [mailto:Goffma_at_aol.com] Well, unless you've manipulated the photo or put the camera on gimbals, the angle of the photograph implies that it was shot with the camera in your hands instead of on your fancy camera post. This means that you were probably not holding your paddle and probably were not willing to let go of your camera and grab for your paddle! Since I don't think you are familiar with Greenland Roll #38 (rolling while holding an expensive camera), you probably failed to roll and had to wet exit. My favorite Greenland Roll is #26-1/2 (known as "ohfuqwhthvidn" - accent on the second syllable). This is the one where you capsize unexpectedly, say "oh sh*t" and attempt to breathe underwater. The last part is a general flailing about with the hands and the roll ends with Dubside extending the "hand of god" while averting his eyes. It always gets the crowd going. I think they like all the bubbles. Craig Jungers Royal City, WA On 9/23/07, Mark Sanders <sandmarks_at_ca.rr.com> wrote: > > What's the name for Greenland Roll #38? Kodakksanzhandz? My guess (and I train for guessing) is that you rolled up a little too hard and your momentum and the wind combined to keep you going right over again. Telling where the camera is mounted is practically giving away the answer, but I guess not everyone knows that besides the SM Camera Cradle, I also have a helmet cam. MS -----Original Message----- Where is your camera mounted? Jen -----Original Message----- Ah! I forgot about the camera cradle! Well, that explains everything. You were busy pressing the camera shutter with your right hand instead of sweeping the paddle and you fell over because of a lack of support from the right hand. Actually, you probably had it set on automatic shutter click or extracted it from video. So I'm not sure why your roll failed, but the view point does seem to be very high off the water. Was this the paddle that snapped in two, sending the camera flying towards the sky? Very obvious. Your Head is leading the boat, not following it. I figured it was pretty easy and just about everyone got it right, but you had to realize my camera was on my helmet. My head must have been coming up too early, or the picture would have an angle closer to that of the kayak. As it is it's almost perfectly level. I'm sure that speaks to my attention to good photography rather my inability to roll right! Of course, the picture doesn't rule out someone yankin' on my bowline!
