G'Day,

Two requests.

Can anyone recommend a three or four part paddle - are they practical/strong enough for sea kayaking?

Can anyone recommend a luggage trolley to transport back pack folding kayaks. I'm looking for one thats solid and breaks down small enough to fit in the assembled kayak.

All the best, PeterO

I wish such thing existed commercially. I assume you don't mean barges like
Klepper AEII, that can take their Klepper Foldy kayaking cart (it can be
used as a luggage cart, too). For FC Kahuna I had to make a "kayak and
luggage cart" - can be used both as a kayak cart (midwheels), and with added
aluminum poles - as a luggage cart. Essentially, I've been using the
concept by Alex Fergusson from NZ, - only added the poles. Here are some old
photos (it's been modified since then):

There are commercial backpack carts for backpack only - by Feathercraft and
www.paddleboy.com . The former has tiny wheels - even if it's just a
backpack with kayak, and no other gear, these wheels are skinny. Paddleboy
version also works as end-wheels for assembled kayak (not as
middle-wheels), which puts all the stress on your hands, and as I recall
their wheels are still small.

Coorection to the previous post. Paddleboy end-wheels are not meant for
backpacks - at least, not without some modification. Also, FC backpack cart
is designed for use with FC backpack, so again some (very minor)
modifications might be needed for other backpacks. Anyway, with exception
for monstrous Klepper Foldy, I can't recall any commercial cart that can be
used both as kayak mid-wheels AND a good backpack cart.

I have two Aqua Bound four piecers that are quite old. They are carbon
but don't have the new TLC coupler.

I have used them a lot. I pack them with my Feathercraft and ship with
the boat. Two piece paddles seem more vulnerable to being snapped when
packed with the boat.

Never had the slightest problem with the paddles. I am fanatical about
always disassembling them as soon as I am done paddling, even before I
get out of the boat. Equally fanatical about always dipping them into
the water before I put them together.

They feel light to me, but part of that is because my usual paddle is a
Mithcell Sea Blade, which is heavy as madoern paddles go. I have never
done a rescue, paddlefloat or otherwise, using them. I like the big
blades, the swing weight of the blades and the flexy feel of the paddle
generally. I paddle pretty hard and have braced and rolled with them.

... and I would rather go for Lendal, than Aquabound. My 4-piece Aqua has
developed loose joints and leaks around push-buttons after 2 seasons of
moderate use. Lendal, at least, should not be worse than Aqua.

G'day,

Thanks everyone for all your ideas on two piece and four piece paddles and kayak trolleys. I've decided on the Lendal but as far as trolleys go I'm still thinking about a German design that Stephan suggested and also really liked the home made TCart that Alex suggested.

Stephan would their be any chance of translating the German company contact details for me? There's a beer in it when I'm back on/in the water end November!

All the best, PeterO
