Well, here's an interesting story about a woman surviving 8 hours in the
water after falling out of her kayak using a novel floatation technique.

I'm guessing that the water temperature was pretty warm!

Apparently even the dogs thought she was too stupid to hang around with and
swam off. I'm guessing that when she poured out half her water bottle
(instead of drinking it) that was the last straw. Dogs will only put with so
much.

Or did they just take the phrase "man's best friend" too literally?

My favorite quote is:

"...and then I realize the kayak is gone, and so I realize my PFD hasn't
fallen out of the boat like it's supposed to," Theresa recalled.
like it's the PFD's responsibility to follow her into the water! Gotta love
it.

That quote jumped out at me as well.

The implication is that "Theresa" believed that the proper use of a
PFD merely requires placing it in the kayak rather than wearing
it. Furthermore, the article author excepted that the proper use of
a PFD does not require that the user actually wear it, thus
perpetuating the myth that a PFD is supposed to fall out of a kayak
within reach of it's owner after a capsize. I find this ignorance
regarding the proper usage of a PFD somewhat scary. I hope that
someone more enlightened in the Corpus Christie area (I know there
are at least a couple of Paddlewisers in that area) will submit an
editorial response to the story.

fellow paddlers:

i am hoping the the mediator of this list will read this email before it is
widely distributed. If it is an inappropriate intrusion, i would hope that
it is not distributed.

i do not in any way desire to upset the purpose and direction of threads
related to this list.

as a producer of a commercial product which has relevance concering this
particular email, i know that any comments that i make would appear
self-serving.

I must however confess that i had struggled with my love to kayak and the
realization that paddling with my dog on deck was simply not a safe
combination for many years.

I ended up developed a system to bring together my love for kayaking and my
desire to spend that enjoyment with my dog.

it would seem to me relevant to point out that equiping a kayak to better
manage the addition of these live animals would be favourable to this near
death experience.

your comments related to this would be appreciated.

Sincerely,

Bart
