I see Tim Ingram has posted his formerly self-published (but virtually
unknown) book online now with a 2006 copyright and updates. Among other
things he has published copyrighted Paddlewise posts online in the chapter
below. Also in this chapter I discover I have another first I can add to my
Vitae. I'm apparently about the most prolific mass murderer on the planet
(outside the realm of politicians and world leaders anyway).

Last I heard, a few years ago, was that Tim was being treated for his mental
illness and we weren't supposed to make fun of him anymore. The doctors and
psychiatrists were probably discovered to be in the pay of the worldwide
Kayak and Canoe murder for profit conspiracy that I'm a hit man for.

http://www.canoekayaksafety.com/chapterfour.html

I should probably sue him for libel. Who knows, maybe he has inherited a
fortune or something like that. I'm sure our conspiracy against him has
prevented him from getting his just riches from his fool-proof sponsons so I
probably can't collect much there.

Serves you right for going home in a huff. ;)

If you'd used the sp****ns, I guess you would have left in a huff'n'puff?

Where can I get one of these "huffs" that Matt went home in? I've Googled
all over but no luck. The mfgr must be no longer in business. Just my luck.

"Huffs" are available everywhere, and in fact seem to be in very
common supply on the Internet.

Most people make their own, though - I don't think they're for sale
much. I'm sure you'd have no trouble making one.

Matt,
After read just a few paragraphs of Tim's book I have come to the following
conclusions

If I were not a sea kayaker I would conclude:
Being self published means no publisher would touch it with a ten foot pole
This guy is on a rant
He is upset that no one is buying his product
He is myopic in his opinions
If I listened to the opinion of those he slanders I would probably agree
with them
Using agencies such a Homeland Security and the Coast Guard makes me suspect
he is into conspiracy theories. (The government is trying to hide the fact
that UFO's use sponsons!)

Being a seakayaker I want to thank Matt for "inventing the paddle float
rescue". I carry a paddle float just incase and I teach it in my classes. If
that makes me evil in Tim's eyes then I guess I am in good company.
Just laugh this guy off, Matt, he isn't worth getting "in a huff" about.
(Not that I believe you "walked off in a huff"unless The Huff is a new kayak
and you paddled off in it.)

take care
Bob

------------------------------------------------

I own a pair of sponsons. I bought them before I ever heard of all the
controversy Tim has stirred up. I've never used them other than practice,
but they stay in my hatch in case of some catastrophic failure of my boat or
me. They seem a well made product. For a solo paddler, I think they're a
reasonable thing to have for emergencies.

However, I have used my paddle float quite often in real situations. It's
much easier to deploy in various configurations to get you back in your boat
quick. I used it in trying to learn how to roll and always carry it in my
cockpit.

It is sad that Tim's attacks and unreasonable attitude probably keep people
from being interested in a product that has it's place on the water. A
paddle float is not a panacea that will keep everyone alive who ventures out
on the water without the proper skills and training, but neither are
sponsons. I felt having sponsons to back up my paddle float was a wise
decision, but don't expect either to save me from all the situations I might
find myself in. In practice, I did not find sponsons to provide adequate
floatation to make reentry a simple act and would expect to back them up
with my paddle float if I ever needed to use them.

Ultimately you need to know your abilities and limitations and act
accordingly. Attacking anyone who tries to make kayaking a safer experience
is a wasted effort.

Mark.
Well put. I will be the first to admit that I have never tried sponsons. My
comments were more about how Mr. sponson presents himself and his product.
Slaming and putting down another person inorder to sell your product doesn't
set well with me. Maybe that is why american politics often turns my stomac.
My advice is to build your skills rather than depending on floats, sponsons,
divine intervention or whatever.

Yahaddabethere to fully appreciate how awful this was. There was no humor

to recall it.

It boggles me, most of a decade later, that this subject returns.

Given the "virtually unknown" status of Tim's treatise I would just
ignore it. Doing anything else would just provide more grist for
Tim's mill, would not accomplish anything useful for you, and would
further complicate life for Tim's family.

Some small number of people will undoubtedly read it and some
fraction of those may take his ranting seriously, some of those may
actually wade down to chapter four, and one guy may actually
recognize your name. Do you really care what that guy thinks?

Lest anyone should forget, previous (sane and sensible) discussions on the
subject are archived under

http://www.paddlewise.net/topics/boatequip/sponson.html

I perused Mr. Ingram's patents briefly. I cannot fathom why patents were
granted given the existing prior art -- and I'm not referring to what is
listed as prior art in the patent itself!

According to his arrest report which he included in Appendix 4 he's
retired....

The RCMP and OPP appear to have had him arrested for his persistent
communications with regard to sponson safety.

Clearly, you must work harder if you want to rise above the rest. ;-)

In order to help you out, I spidered the entire site and fed it to an

Indeed true! All can be brave behind a keyboard. It could be worse, I
guess ....

Remember that thousands have written, acted and/or taken part in fictional
murders, in films, books, and plays. Very few of them have turned into
real ones!
