My guess is you're referring to "Paddle-to-the-sea" by Holling C. Holling written in the 1940's. It is a book which I'm sure has special meaning for many paddlers (myself included), in lighting the spark of imagination for long distance paddling adventures. It is still available from Amazon, etc. You should also check out the movie version, done by famed Canadian paddler Bill Mason, and available on DVD.
