The video is a bit long (all pictures) for a "routine" crossing many of us
in Victoria have done but, nevertheless an interesting video,,,

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pmUAO0NSBHE%20

October has actually been fantastically beautiful with warm sunshine,
magnificent fall colours, and intense lighting brightening that incredible
fall foliage. I didn't get out at all paddling - working too much to pay
bills (portfolio went south as did the housing market, but lots of work
still - G/Bless Canada, heh, heh). I think it was last week we had one of
those fantastical days with Jordan River running almost 17 seconds at 12
feet, all glassy swell with loooooong, tall breaks. Alternatively, September
was WILD with huge storms and seas and wind while Sean Morley did his
circumnavigation of Vancouver Island in record time (albeit with a new
understanding of risk-management). I was sad I didn't make it up to Cape
Scott - it is not often you get 27 foot swell, 65 knot winds up there when
it is still warm, lots of daylight, and all the access roads are snow-free
and still in summer condition. That would have been some good photo ops of
the seascape. Ah welll...

I liked this "video", actually. It's important to remember that what is a
routine passage for some is a milestone - or even life-changing experience -
for others. The music was good too. Nice post.

The photos made me realize, suddenly, that although I've been to the Gulf
Islands and Vancouver Island many times, I've never traveled there (or back)
by ferry. It's always been in a small boat of one sort of another. I'm
hoping to keep that record intact.

Thanks for the link.

Hey, this was a great series of photos!
Why are some black and white and some color? (the black and white did
seem to intensify the experience, in many ways). My guess is two different
cameras!
Thanks for posting this. Looks like a long day with the clouds changing
overhead.
When they did this crossing, do they notify the Coast Guard or any
agency before they leave? Or just leave a trip plan with family? I assume no cell
phone reception once you get out a ways.
     Thanks!

Paddlewisers,

I watched the video and enjoyed it. It captured the thrill and camaraderie of a crossing.

A particular crossing may be common, but that doesn't mean you won't die if you blow it. I also like to say that anybody can be lucky and make a crossing, but it takes a lot of different things to be a safe consistent crosser.

Duane,

I think the camaraderie evident in the photography was one of the reasons I
posted the link.

Pam,

Cell phones work fine. No one notifies the CG - just vessel services if you
are into that. I never pay head to communication issues unless there is fog.
These are serious waters as far as making sure you don't get in the way of
bigger tonnage.

Their October run had a bit of wind I'd say. Just right. I've had some good
crossings myself. Usually takes me forever as I always end up playing in the
overfalls and whirl pools if its a big tide in Active Pass. Crossings
further north are shorter but more awe inspiring up near Lasqueti Island
when long-fetch S.Easters blow againt the ebb. It's all good though, and all
fun. Except when its flat calm. Kinda dulll. :-)

Doug,

Thanks for sharing this video. Although I haven't made the crossing by
kayak, it brought back all of the wonderful memories my wife and I have from
our only paddling trip in BC a year ago September.

The guys on the crossing looked like they were enjoying themselves, wish I
could have been there too.
