Kayakers,

I just got back from a wonderful 7-day Catalina Island crossing and circumnav trip with 6 of my buddies.

By far the highlight was on the 19 nautical mile crossing over, when for 40 minutes a minke whale followed us. Every 3-4 minutes it came up for air 10-30 yards from us. Occasionally we saw it swim under our kayaks to change sides. It actually joined our pod. We also saw a blue whale spout.

I have two really good photos of the minke whale with kayaks at my photo journal:

It must be nice to live where you can depend on it. Of course, we don't
*have* to do 19nm crossings either.

Who had the Mariner II (at least it looks like a Mariner II - almost a
duplicate of mine)?

I forgot to ask you if you used your GP for the entire paddle. I am still
not used to a GP but have been told that the "flutter" goes away once you
figure it out.

If you are getting flutter then turn the paddle slightly and it will
go away.

Craig,

Good eye! That's a Mariner II, owned and paddle by Steve Wilson of local kayak song singing fame, who is using a GP made by me. Steve really likes his Mariner II, and he has a Coaster too. Steve and I were just saying on the trip that with all the Broze brother design genius, it's funny they never fancied the GP. And a lot of Mariner diehards use GPs.

(mine is). The M-II is the fastest boat I've ever paddled... it does 3kts
with zero effort and 4kts with only a little more. I have not had much of a
chance to take mine to salt water though. Since I am lazy at heart I like
paddling with others and only having to take half the strokes to go the same
speed. Of course this might not work for you guys. :P

I'll have to ask Matt what his opinions of a GP are. He's off on a family
exploration trip but due home pretty soon. I know that his opinion of
paddles is pretty close to mine (I loved my lightning graphite paddle and
still mourn its loss). Maybe he'll read this and bless us with a few words.
:)

Next weekend (for me) will be on the muthah-ship which, after installing the
new priming fuel pump and the transom bracket for the 9.9hp 4-stroke
Mercury, will be off to the San Juans for a couple of days.
