I was mooching around on paddlingplanet.com (which is a compendium of blogs)
and stumbled across a posting about a guy who has a family pass to Canada's
museum that hosts canoes and kayaks. Since I'm an old guy and have little to
do, I went to the blog and read his posting and then noticed this: "For your
viewing pleasure, below is the NFB production of Cisar's Bark Canoe. Even on
the original, there is no narration; just Cisar Newashish himself
demonstrating the techniques of birchbark canoe building."

This is the link and he's right... there is audio but virtually no talking.
It is not a short clip as the video is pretty detailed but it's very
interesting for those of us who enjoy ancient boatbuilding techniques. I was
particularly interested to discover that he sheaths the inside of his canoe
with think strips of cedar. Oh, and one more thing, I could see no evidence
of power tools. In fact the only tools he uses were a knife (quite sharp), a
hammer and a brace and bit. Right up Duane Strosaker's alley. :)

It seemed worthwhile to share with Paddlewisers.

Craig,

I'm all into using power tools. I was just using a table saw and belt sander last night for fitting deck beams in a skinboat. Tonight I'll be using a drill press for the peg holes in a harpoon and throwing board. I don't have plans for a BB canoe yet.

Duane,

I've been tracking your building career and felt certain that you were ready
to turn back to nature; particularly in view of all the natural materials
available where you live. No birch trees in Long Beach? Well, rats. Don't
kevlar and graphite grow on trees or bushes... or something?

As for myself, I was amazed to watch someone build an entire boat and not
once utter a swear word. :P

Craig,

When my wife is in the living room watching TV, she can hear me swearing in the garage. She told me the time I steam bent rips for three quarter-scale skinboat models in one day was a record for swearing. I think my rib breaking rate was about 30%.

Duane,

If you make a video my advice is to have no audio and use a narrative. :P

Craig

PS: My shop is 1.5 blocks from the house. If you can, move the garage. :D
