The fact that police made him wear a PFD is a clear civil rights violation.

I don't understand why they threw him a life vest. Seems like a waste
of precious tax dollars. Besides, he clearly wanted to go for a swim.
So let him.

Well if he'd made it to Lake Pend Oreille in Idaho the Uberdeputy, would
have thrown him a life vest, just after he finished his coffee and donut.

What the h#ll is an Underdeputy anyway? Is this some new form of police
speak? If I'd been the suspect I'd have thrown the life vest back and
yelled, "I'm not taking no stinking life vest from an Underdeputy. You get
the Overdeputy down here right now or I'll drown myself."

What sort of self respecting criminal would allow himself to be captured by
something calling themselves an Underdeputy. Can you imagine a female
office putting up with such a title. Is the world going nuts, wait I think
I know the answer.

Undersheriff is the assistant to the Sheriff (which, in this County, is an
elected office).

There is another... and interesting... article about this here:
http://www.columbiabasinherald.com/articles/2010/03/04/news/doc4b8da4eca50b1612056940.txt

Apparently the culprit kidnapped an out-of-town construction worker who was
staying at a local motel along with a female. The female was originally
thought to be another victim of the kidnapping but turned out to be an
accomplice (although did not, apparently, jump in the lake).

They forced the construction worker to buy them some stuff at Wal-Mart and
then took him back to his motel and released him. Not quite candidates for
the Darwin Award but I'm guessing they'll make another try once they get out
of jail because they didn't think the guy would call the cops. They stopped
for a bite to eat at a Denny's next to the freeway where cops found them
with the Wal-Mart loot still in the car.

Never a dull moment in Moses Lake.

Apropos to this thread (and the linked story below) I was called to the
office of one of my clients at a grain elevator in Ephrata (the County
Seat... and where the jail is located) yesterday. They had lost their
internet connection and since their business runs a VPN to a dozen other
grain elevators across about 200 miles of territory they were pretty excited
about getting it back. (Turned out to be the WAN network port that had gone
south... very unusual... but I digress.)

And now for the rrrrest of the storrrry.....

While I was chatting with the gal who runs the office there she pointed to
the newspaper article (link below) and mentioned that the truck pictured
(parked in a precarious place on a hillside) was theirs and had been stolen
by the guy to whom the deputy eventually threw the PFD. LOL.

Come on Craig! even I can tell when you're making things up. Out-of-town
construction worker, yeah right. But thanks for clearing up the confusion
between Underdeputy and Undersheriff. Who would want to be an Underdeputy
when you could be an Undersheriff. Cool.

"My names Friday. Undersheriff Friday and this is the city. Moses Lake
Washington.

That's right Undersheriff Friday. Stop that sniggering do you find something
funny?"

No, I'm just wondering where's Sheriff Friday?

"There is no Sheriff Friday."

But you just said you are under sheriff Friday, so where's Friday?

"Look there is no Sheriff Friday."

Sure what ever?

"OK lets get started. I called this press conference to inform you that
there's a crime wave sweeping our shores. That's right it's not even safe
for an out-of-town construction worker to hook up with a local girl. This
could have a devastating impact on the local economy. In addition people
are escaping from the chain gang, kidnapping innocent out-of-town
construction workers and forcing them to shop at Wal-Mart."

Which Wal-Mart? "The one right here in Moses Lake." How do you know the
girl was a local? "She's the Sheriff's sister." What's her name?
"Gendarme." Where is she now? "At large." How far is that from Moses Lake?
"What!" Never mind, is she an accomplish? "No she's a Pentecostal. How
much time will the kidnapper get? "Minimum Twenty years." How much for
shopping at Wal-Mart? "Minimum Thirty years." How much for swimming
without a PFD? "Minimum Forty years." Will that be consecutive or
concurrent? "Doesn't matter." Why not, who's hearing the case? "Judge
Jungers."

Right I'll get the rope.

There's a thousand stories in the naked City. This is just one of them.

In Portland, you would need a precarious parking place permit, or
else
get pulled to the pound. Portland (and Oregon) has a permit for everything,
including spitting and belching, and now kayaking.
