As far as gray whales dying in Puget Sound,
I think we can rule out smoking as a risk factor.

Off kayaking for a few days (not sure how far I'll get with serious
tendonitis, but us older grey-bearding types know how to paddle through the
pain). And I need to get on the water and get away, even if for a day or
two...

Almost bought an almost new Nordkapp Jubilee this week from my Storm Island
buddy who gave up kayaking soon after that; the kayak has had almost no use:

http://www.usedvictoria.com/classified-ad/11736138

It would make a great touring boat, with VCP rudder, foredeck pump, and
built-in compass, while I work toward acquiring or making a day boat for
serious play. However, the $3200.00 (though it does come with
paddle/skirt)would go well toward a more updated, fun kayak - either a day
boat or touring, that had a better hull for intimate coastal play. And if I
did get a newer used Nordkapp I'd just reconfigure it anyway, and still not
get what I really want.

I'm certainly happy to hear you are off kayaking. Good news, tendonitis
notwithstanding. You're right about us ol' guys paddling through the pain.
I put 2.5nm on the Mariner II this afternoon (with the GP) after attending
the funeral for an old friend whom I will miss. The church in Royal City
(where we had our farm) was packed. One thing about a small community; we
sure know how to turn out for a funeral. Standing room only.

Paddling, as any of us can attest, is wonderful therapy.

Have fun, Doug.

Normally would not reply - but $3200 for a used boat is very high in my
opinion.

I have noticed that the market for used kayaks in the Vancouver/Victoria
area (or maybe all of BC and even Canada, for all I know) is priced higher
than it is in the USA. I've even seen paddlers in BC talk about shopping for
used kayaks on the Seattle craigslist to find a boat at a better price.

Still... even so... something brand new with a decent spray deck and a good
paddle plus the built-in pump and compass might make it a decent deal for
someone who likes Nordies.

The kayak is virtually new with no tax. However, the small front hatch is a
real turnoff. The stock rudder sucks. I spent hours modifying my original
heavy Nordy.

I went over to Ecomarine today to test paddle the Maelstrom Vaag. Nice boat.
Not as rock solid on the "rails" as the Tiderace series were. No where near
the build toughness as the Brit boats. They didn't have the Shoreline in
today that I wanted to try. They did have a nice used Nordkapp LV I was
tempted to by, but as I'd cut it up and modify it, it's over $3000.00 is too
much.

Hiked up Mt. Seymour very early this AM, then hit Deep Cove kayak. The only
really nice boat they had was a Romany Surf. Gordin is right, they are
really good boats well made for real use survivability.
