I'm intrigued by an ad that just came via Optics Planet for a $2.50 LED light
that would seem to have great potential for emergency use and easy portability
in a PFD. I wonder if anyone has used these:

You can see their advertising is aimed at military-type uses and maybe the
range isn't good enough for a potential search and rescue plane to pick it
up.

On an entirely different topic, and realizing most on this list seem to be
from climes where direct exposure to the water is un-fun most of the year, any
of your crossed over to standup paddle-boarding? I'm sorely tempted here -
like I need another boat in my garage, but it looks like great fun.

Hi Natalie,

The price is certainly right even if the range (1/4 mile) is not so hot.
They would be great for keeping track of other paddlers in a group night
situation though. The downside being that they are disposable which implies
that they are one-use. Of course, not many of us paddle more than a couple
of times a year at night. Kind of a cool web site though.

As far as SUP goes, I've never been tempted. I have enough trouble sitting
in a kayak. But my walking is not all that great (and not getting any
better either).

I can bicycle though. :D

Here's an actual scenario that demonstrates the need for a light. A group
of kayakers paddles
all day, with the goal of camping at a certain remote site. Upon arrival,
the group discovers
that the site has been closed due to persistent bear visits. Now it's an
hour or two before
dark, and the group has to paddle more miles, some of it in the dark.
Well, this was certainly
unexpected, and it's difficult to keep the group together in the blackness,
not to mention
navigating in strange waters and reading a chart without any visual clues..
You've got a
headlight, but it's buried deep inside your hatch. Oh bother, and etc.

I rented a stand up board last summer while on vacation. It was fun. I
got out in some waist high surf and got a couple of rides - I crashed
far more than I got rides...

Over the winter I bought a standup paddle and I'm going to use an old
windsurfer as a board, for flatwater exploring.

The view from the standup board is very nice. I can see using a standup
board for doing creek/marsh explorations. It's a fairly good ab
workout. The mechanics of transferring the paddle stroke back into the
board, through a standing position don't seem very good. I'll stick
with a craft that has a seat and foot braces for getting anywhere.

For me I can't justify the cost of an additional craft. I didn't like
it enough to pay for a new board. The old windsurfer isn't a perfect
shape, but it's in the garage and close enough.

I'm sticking with my surf ski as a primary craft, with maybe one rental
per year if there is waist high surf and I want to do that again...

I have access to a fleet of SUP's, and will often take guests from
out of state on a tour of the harbor on them. The SUP's seem to make
more of an impression then kayaks - go figure. SUP's are fun and quick
and easy to get out on the water with, so I get the attraction - sort
of. You need some kind of fanny pack if you would like to carry
anything, like water, sunscreen or a snack. I often toy with the idea of
getting one and fully outfitting it with fishing gear, rod holders,
tackle boxes, fish finder, and maybe even a small cooler - but it would
be more for the humor of it then the reality of fishing from it :-) And
I feel that they are a little pricey, with a board and paddle costing
close to a grand. Not to mention that they are currently going through
the battle of the pfd's out here -

http://supconnect.mylocallineup.com/SUP-Other/us-congressman-challenges-paddleboard-ruling.html

Like I said, they're fun, but I'll stick with kayaks.
