Carrying a gun for bears is the same self preservation technique as carrying a
dive knife for sharks. A bear/shark charges me, I'm wounding my paddling /
dive partner.........

Depends on the gun. A 15" T/C Encore in .416 Rigby is still a
"handgun". But it is perfectly adequate for any bear. [shot
placement is still important to *stop* the bear] You might break
your wrist shooting it, but thats a different story...

You've got to choose your method of dealing with these situations
intelligently though. If you can't shoot offhand well, forget the gun.
If you can't be passive when under attack, don't choose the play
dead approach. If you can't be aggressive when in pain, don't
choose the aggressive response approach. Know yourself, then
use your head. No method is 100% effective. Any method can
be 0% effective if used by someone with inappropriate personal
characteristics.

You still only have to be just a little faster than your partner. By the
way take insurance out on them before the trip.
