I need to ship a Klepper folding boat from sunny California to Michigan.
I've never attempted something like this before and was hoping perhaps someone
on this list could steer me to the most economical and easiest way to go about
it. FYI it's a Klepper sail boat and not a kayak, but it's made by the same
people and I'm sure the process of sending it is about the same. Can anyone
help?

Thanks,

Scott

Assume you have the bags for the Klepper sailing craft. Use them.
cushion everything with bubble wrap and just send it via UPS as is. I
have done that in the past with folding kayaks in their bags. However,
it has been quite awhile since I did it that way (about five years). So
check with UPS to see if they will accept a shipment that way.

My guess is that it will cost you about $50 or $60.

this was in regards to a 125 lb wooden crate I had shipped from san fran
to phila. it was less than half the price of every other shipper I
researched.
This is door to door by the way.
they were very pleasent to deal with by the way and gentle with the
sculpture.

I would try UPS. The Klepper folks used to make a printed page or
two about how to ship the boat. I seem to recall that you tape or tie
several of the pieces together, and then wrap the skin around the ribs
for cushion. I also have wrapped lifejackets and other soft stuff
around frame pieces.

It is a good idea to ship the boat in advance if you have a safe
place for them to hold it. (I think UPS will keep it until you pick it
up). You can also ship some of your trip clothes while you are at it.
This will make traveling for you a lot easier.

The bad side to all of this is that I don't think it will be all
that cheap. Check with UPS and let us know your results. I seem to
recall it being about $50 each way for everything when I last did it,
and that was with an inflatable kayak that was lighter, and boxed to
smaller dimensions. If you fly, you could probably take the boat within
your flight allowance if you pack light. I always figure that the boat
is more important than my clothes! My wife does not share this view!

Let us know your actual results.

We recently shipped a Folbot double from NC to NJ for $40 via UPS. This
was in 2 packages (2 bags) and ~75 lbs. We fabricated cardboard boxes
from bike boxes and used a little bubble wrap. Bicycle shops generally
toss them. Be sure to pad any sharp projecting pieces inside the bags,
as they have the potential to punch through both bag and cardboard with
rough handling.
