A new Northwest Outdoor catalog arrived today and shows two interesting
stowable kayak dollies, the Midwheels and the Stern Wheels. They can
also be seen at:
htp://www.nwoc.com

Both would seem to be suitable for folders. Anyone who has tried the
Kayak Kaddy on his skin boat probably knows that the little "v" finds no
support above the keel and the whole thing gets gets hopelessly skewed.
Other stowables have similar problems. The Stern Wheels, however, has
"v" arms 8" long that should reach to a longeron for needed support.
Similarly, the Midwheels ought to also find support at several longerons
and also work well.

Because the picture of the Midwheels is a little dark, I have asked for
a larger drawing to be mailed to me. Once it comes, I can fax it
around.

Ken:

Your suggestions are appreciated. I've also had very good
service from the Primex cart in both single and double folders
(hardshells too) including our somewhat massive Feathercraft K2
and Northwest Kayaks Seascape II. We have three Primex carts
here for various purposes. My favorite is the oldest model with
the straight axle. I've refit it so the axle is removable
(stainless bolts and wing nuts) so the whole package is very
compact when stowed. BTW the Primex wheels fit nicely near your
ankles on the side between gunwale and chine bars on both Klepper
I and IIs and on the Feathercraft K2 -- easy to wedge into place
and out of the way, and so far, have never been dislodged in
rescue practice. One other advantage of the old Primex version:
I mounted a Feathercraft stud-type mast step on the axle and a
stainless 2" ID "U" bolt on one of the cross bars. The top mast
piece from our Twins or BSD Batwing serves as a long handle and
viola, a very strong gear cart with handle suitable for
transporting bagged boats and other heavy gear over long
distances. Now as soon as I follow Karen Hancock's lead and get
my scanner running I'll put up some pictures.

Regards,

Rich Mitchell

I made a dolly which works extremely well for a folder. I used 2 12"
"noodles" cut in half and glued to some scrap wood. The edge of the wood is
about 6 inches apart and the keel drops in perfectly. The axle and 2 plastic
wheels run perpendicular to the noodles.

Bob,

Are the "noodles" you are talking about like the supports on the CLC Yak Kart?

When considering kayak dollies (why do I get the image of several
blondes in PFDs with too much rouge?) you might want to look at the one
from Feathercraft. It is simplicity itself. Its clever arrangement
doesn't need strapping on and should be able to handle any kayak up to
about 55 pounds or so. It folds down to a small package that fits in a
flat bag that also comes with it. I can't imagine anything being
smaller than this baby.

The cart is meant to carry a disassembled Feathecraft single in a bag or
the assembled boat. Its wheels are small, so it can't be used in sand
or very rough terrain. Costs around $50.
