This past summer I took a night sailing course in Boston Harbor. On the
return trip we had the Boston skyline as a backdrop with it's thousands of
lights. Very pretty, but I was instructed to find a couple of flashing buoy
lights a mile or two away, amongst all those lights. With explicit
directions I as able to locate them after a few minutes, but then I blinked
my eyes and they were gone forever.

Is this a natural or acquired skill? In either case, I don't seem to have
it.

Fortunately I don't plan on any (much) night time urban paddling. I've only
been on one night time paddle (full moon), and while interesting, not
something (for me) to get excited about. I do know circumstances could make
night paddling a reality and have been following the thread with intrest

One of the most well attended series of trips done here are the
moonlight trips on the Delaware. We'll get 20 or more boats on a trip.
Generally we do it a few days before the Full Moon, so that the moon is
already up when the sun sets, hence no dark period.
It's a very different way of experiencing the river and you see a lot of
wildlife. I've had Beavers swim up to try to figure out what I was.....
Mostly we carry cyalume lights so we could be seen, though one paddler
has a running light on a post mounted behind him and higher than his head.
