Anyone use those folding, waffle-like, foam pads for under the sleeping
bag? How do they compare to a thermarest self-inflating? I have a
regular thermarest, and it is just a bit thinner than I would like for
complete comfort. I am thinking of buying the thermarest deluxe, but I
wonder about these other things. They fold up to a pretty tight size.
Might be a problem getting them into a "normal" hatch, but it wouldn't
be a problem for my Feathercraft.

A Thermarest is comfier, IMO. but moe expensive and more fragile.

I use a Ridge Rest, and find it works well. It's lighter than the thermorest,
and I don't worry about possible air leaks. That said, my wife's Thermorest
is more comfortable.

Hi Rene,

Comfort is a subjective thing, but my .02 on the subject....I have a Ridge
Rest and a Thermarest Deluxe. The Thermarest sees about 75% of the action
and and 100% of the kayak camping action. If weight and size aren't
critical the Thermarest Deluxe is a nice way to go. Not one of the many
(ok, 7 or 8) foam pads that I've gone through over the years have compared
in comfort to the thermarest.

We used them on a camping trip in Maine last year, and didn't like them
as well as the thermarests. I'd go with the thicker thermarest. There
are a couple of different thicknesses, so you might not have to go all
the way to "deluxe."

Ok, looks pretty much like a consensus. No waffles for me.

RE: open-cell foam pads under the Thermarest, and about deluxe Thermarest
pads.

I don't use either of them any more. The open-cell foam sponges up water, and
it does nothing to insulate you against ground chill in cold weather. Both
types of pads take up more room in the boat, or on the deck, than I'm willing
to allocate to my "bedroom".

A shortie Thermrest Lite is sufficient, even for this bony, aging body. But -
take a repair kit. Somebody said they're delicate, and that's true, though
I've had very good luck with them.

I still use a simple piece of blue insulite foam pad. It is cut so it will
stretch out along the floor of my cockpit. It provides insulation for my
cockpit while paddling, helps keep the boat clean and me above whatever
little bit of water which may be lingering in the cockpit. Carrying it in
this way it takes up no space to speak of. It might not be quite as eloquent
as the more exotic sleeping pads, but it works for me.
