Paddlewisers,

Wanting a good current table example for a sea kayaking course I teach, I
accessed the TideX program at Tide/Current Predictor and looked up the current tables for
Deception Pass, WA. The tables show biiiiiig numbers and the footnote "Units
of estimates are bogo-knots." This is a term I've never found before.

Could anyone define "bogo-knots" for me, or refer me to a site with that info?

Note: Bogo-knots should not be confused with "Bozo-knots" -- a unit of
measure used for gauging the speed of micro-sized kayaks paddled by orange-
haired clowns.

Thanks again,
Harold Tervort

Sorry Harold, looks like your wrong again, "bogo-knots" are, in fact,
"bozo-knots", yep, one-in-the-same.

Apparently the colloquial mis-pronunciation stems from the term often being
heard through a mouth full of the kayakers staple food, saltines and peanut
butter.

Q: What are bogo-knots?

A: Way back before I found out that hydraulic current stations generate
results that are actually in units of knots squared, I didn't know what
units they were, so I called them "bogo-knots." Since that time, I have (1)
changed the units in my source data to knots squared, and (2) added
functionality to XTide version 2 to convert these to regular knots.
Therefore, if you are still seeing bogo-knots, then you are definitely using
obsolete data and an obsolete version of XTide, or accessing a web site that
is using obsolete data and an obsolete version of XTide. I am not the
maintainer of any such web sites, and I recommend upgrading to XTide 2,
which will barf all over any harmonics files that still contain
"bogo-knots."

Does this make them square knots?
Sorry, I couldn't resist.

visible, your reverie is abruptly shattered by the ancient cry of a great
blue heron as she lifts uncertainly from the brilliant blue of a
mussel-shell beach witnessed only by the brooding, wet spruce....your
passage home seems as much back through time as it does through space.

Duh . . . . So *that's* what a FAQ is. Thanks Woody. I figured it was
probably a really dumb thing to ask. One of these days I'll learn how to
navigate this machine beyond the Dilbert page. :-)

Now, if I could just figure out how to get these saltine crumbs and peanut
butter out of the keyboard . . .
