Dear Susie,

I've tried Tevas, Alp, Merrell, etc. They all fell apart-especially the
Merrells. Soles peel off the Tevas. Velcro straps release when
swimming, unless you back them up with O rings. Strap anchors come out
of the soles on Merrells.

I do a lot of boating, including WW and extended sea kayak trips where
sandals are all we wear in salt water. Sometimes I've taken long side
canyon hikes and even gone trail running in sandals. The hot ticket is
a pair of Chacos, model Z1. Sometimes when we just have one vehicle on
river trips, I've given new meaning to the term "running shuttle" - just
hoofing it back to get the truck, by running on the cinders of the
railroad grade. Obviously, in a tight WW boat, _especially one with
footpegs_ vs a bulkhead, you don't want to risk any kind of a sandal
getting snagged, and a smooth neoprene bootie is a better choice.
However, I just clip the Chacos in behind the seat to wear outside the
ww kayak. The Z1 has a contoured footbed that is very comfortable.

Well, Susie, I had good luck with a pair of Merrells of ancient manufacture --
the anchors lasted forever, and the blame things had a form-fitting strap
which adjusted well and was secured with a Fastex buckle. Wore 'em out -- the
soles got too thin. Have not been able to find anything comparable. I really
hate velcro straps, 'cause they release at inopportune moments, and the velcro
catches on stuff and picks up cockleburrs. Don't use sandals inside the boat,
cause they give too much heel lift and don't have good heel padding

Been using Okespor wet suit booties when the water is cold. They have
massive, well-contoured padding on the heel. The other watershoe I like is a
(discontinued, I think) mesh thing made by Adidas. Really ugly, with a
green/puke yellow/black motif. But, being mesh, it drains well, and postpones
the foot mungies. Got a rugged sole, and a massively padded heel. Good for
when the water warms up some.

Good luck in your search.

For in the boat, the cheapest water shoe I can find at K-mart or Target. I
did get some close out paddling booties from REI that I have not used yet

On land - Chacos

Teva Guide sandals -- though the heel strap tends to wear through from
rubbing on the interior of the kayak.

I usually wear wetsuit booties with my drysuit or wetsuit. Not much in
the comfort department, but they do the job in the fairly cold waters of SE
Alaska. I sometimes wear XtraTuf's (16" high neoprene boots - also known as
"Southeast Sneakers") when out on warm, calm days without wetsuit or
drysuit.

wetsuit booties when it's cold, wal-mart "shower shoes" when it's warm,
and carry teva's or tennis shoes for walking.

Me too but I got the $5.00 special beach shoes from Ames instead of the shower
shoes this year.

I have a low volume boat and there is not much room in the bow for big 'ol
shoes. I have Nike watersocks to wear in the boat, though I've seen from
paddling buddies that I can probably get a comparable, cheaper product at
Wally World. On land, Chacos rule for me. Pricey, *yes.* But the fit is
incredible if you live in them, like I do. Try on both footbeds, though.
The Z-series isn't for everyone, as I found out. The company offered to make
it right for me, after I emailed them. A lot of mail order catalogs don't
offer (and explain) both footbed styles.

I've used sandals, but they got caught in the foot pegs once too often.
Then I went to Teva Wet Climbers (pricey), but they turned out to be too
stiff and just slightly too big for comfort in my boat. Now I'm wearing --
and very happy with -- paddling shoes by Five-Ten. They're very pliable,
take up less room than the Tevas, have great heel protection, and give very
good traction on rocks and -- up to a point -- even on slime. They close
with a soft rubber strap that seems to exert no pressure on the instep, yet
are secure enough to keep the shoe on when wading through muck. If I have
any complaint, it might be that the soles are soft enough to let me feel the
pointy stones I step on sometimes. But if that's the price I pay for their
pliability inside the boat, then I'll pay it.

Does anyone wear bare feet? No one? I'm the only one??? OK, it is winter
and the water is down to 6 degrees C but at least it isn't frozen solid,
helps if you jump in quickly (into the kayak that is).

My latest boat fits better with bare feet too - just fits.

Biodegradeable, renewable feet.

Water shoes from Shoe Carnival in the U.S. They are $24 and they
usually have a sale where you can get a second pair of shoes for 1/2
off. I have a wider foot and they are comfortable. Blue quick drying
fabric on top (neoprene?) and black rubber soles. They are not at my
location so I can't give you a brand name but they are made in the
U.S.A.

I have *paddled* in my bare feet in the past but am reluctant to do it
anymore. In the event of a quick exit I don't want to be fumbling with
shoes. I don't want to risk stepping on the unseen sharp rock, shell,
broken beer bottle, or fish hook on my way to land. Shoes out of the
boat are a must. Two weeks ago I steeped on a screw pointing up 2" out
of the ground by some rocks at the put-in, but was unscathed. Luckily
it was a machine type screw with a flat end instead of a pointed end.

I like the 5-10 water shoes very much. They have reinforcement in the
right places and work well for kayaking and solo canoing with a
pedestal. I have also climbed over a lot of slippery rocks and
appreciate the grippy sole material and design. The low volume design
lets me wear them in WW kayaks since I only have a size 11 foot. My
sons both have 12+ and can't even wear socks in their WW boats. Having
cut my feet on shore before- I like to wear some protective footwear.
The mesh tops also help keep sand out.
