Well, I waited until the end of the day yesterday (Monday) to see if the best
solution on the money transferring situation would surface.

Geno, I put $25 (cash -double wrapped) and dropped it in our office mailbox
last night. Pick-up is at about 11:30A today and it goes to Miami's central
mailing facility. You should have it by the end of the week.

As I said in the letter, it's an honor to participate in this venture. I'm
"cosmopolitan" myself (aka a mutt) and welcome the opportunity to further
international relations - especially when it's connected to paddling. Kudos
to whoever thought of posting it in the first place.

I do not know trhat anyone is coordinating anything. There just isn't much
time to wait around for someone to get a formal organization going.

As I write, QCC is building the boat. It was only good fortune that they
were able to slip it into their production (I understand they are four weeks
backordered).

I certainly can't coordinate anything as I have a vacation planned. You have
no idea what hell is like until you have told my wife that her long awaited
vacation must go on hold for a kayak race.

If everyone does what they can do this will happen. The most important thing
undone at this point is arangements for housing and some one to help
Maligiaq find his way around.

it was also a plea for some money ... not to go into the gory details, but
maligiaq had sponsorship for the race, and then at the last minute, they
pulled their support. geno isn't very well off right now, due to surgery
and other health problems, so he couldn't afford all the expenses of
transportation, lodging etc.

maligiaq is a great guy, he works with whomever he comes into contact
with, and teaches what he can. he is exceptionally polite, and a wonderful
human. he is lucky, in some ways, to be of his generation... to be an
expert in a 1000+ year old disipline [sp?] and also very knowledgable in
computers, which have now, obviously, been a godsend for him!!

thanks to everyone who has supported maligiaq,

mark

I can certainly lend my opinion in support to what appears to be a affable
and totally uneffected young athlete.
Having met Maligiaq in Charleston this April, he took an interest in some
baidarkas that were being constructed under a tent adjacent to the bleachers
and demo area that he was working, indeed he tied a VERY credible lashing on
Ken Winter's 17 footer under construction.....(If there was ever any question
to that particular controversy.......Greenlanders BELIEVE in tight
lashings!!!!) ....... and the youth seemed to take a special interest to my own
ten year old son (something of an athlete himself, in his own right, says I
with pardonable fatherly pride), as Sam took to the ropes stretched for
Maligiaq's rope gymnastics demonstration, and did quite well on them with the
Greenlander's help.....so much so that the kid came home and evicted the swings
from his monkey bars and installed ropes.
Best of luck in Quebec Maligiaq! Smoke 'em!

Colin, I'm afraid scams abound over here.

Americans (I was born in England, raised in Venezuela, and have lived in
Miami for 20 years) are extremely generous and, yes, more than willing to
help others. Unfortunately, the same people who crave the Yankee dollar
(Maligiaq's situation is not a part of this statement) are very quick to
criticize Americans.

As you will recall, my first instinct was to contribute. Someone more
level-headed said, "Wait a minute, let's check this out first." It was duly
checked and verified and I will be sending my contribution today. I will put
"Paddlewise" on the check. Hopefully, Maligiaq's Dad will let us know the
results of Paddlewise contributors.

Jim!! How could you???? A couple of weeks ago there were about 20 boats from
the South Florida Paddlers on a day trip around Indian Key (in the Florida
Keys).

We were all paddling quite merrily when we saw two of "those" people heading
right for us. "Oh, oh," I said, "Here comes the enemy." Did they slow down?
HELL, NO!

I was reminded of Kevin Costner's movie Waterworld.

ps Have fun. I know you'll slow down for the rest of us.

Hi, it's Sandy Kramer and I can't find the nice letter Mr. Padilla wrote to
me. Here's an update and I'm open to suggestions.

Maligiaq travels on Monday the 26th. I called Western Union for a location
near me etc. I'm afraid that $11.95 fee (depending on location, I was told)
is a bit high for a $25 transfer. I can think of two things:

1.	I wait till I get a Montreal address (how long will he be there?) and
slip the cash in an envelope and hope it won't go astray.

2.	Someone who will be seeing Maligiaq will give him the money and I
will send them a check. I'm a civilian Public Information Officer in
the Miami-Dade Police Department (Media Relations Bureau) and my word
is good.

Any other bright ideas?

Yes, Miami is a pretty crazy place -- perhaps that's why I fit in so well!!

Yesterday some friends came over and we paddled "my" lake. Cavorting under
the fountains is especially nice in the hot, sticky South Florida, summer
weather! (PS - after "Eat, Drink, and Be Merrry for tomorrow we die" my
favorite motto is "It's never too late to have a happy childhood." We were
whooping away there.

Today Elaine Harmon and I are going to paddle the Loxahatchee River with the

i'm copying geno [malilgiaq's dad] on this, so he'll let me know if i'm wrong.
i think maybe the best thin is send geno the check's, and he can use western
union once, for all donations... when i shyttled maligiaq from dillon reservoir
to denver yesterday, geno informed me of all the help ralph diaz has generated,
and if everyone sticks to their words [which i think everyone will] then all
will work out ok, and maligiaq will be able to race!!

i especially want to thank ralph diaz and john winters for all their hard work
to make this possible for maligiaq. thanks goes to jackie fenton, our list mom,
for creatinging such a fantastic place for paddlers to gather, and truely support
each other, no matter their walks of life. mark zarn, owner of bonito boats, for
the loan of a greenland style boat, for maligiaq to train in [and give a fantastic
demo to the RMSKC at "paddlefest"] while he's in colorado... and of course to the
numerous denizens of the paddlewise mailing list, for without you, this would
never have happened.

thanks,

mark

Does the kid have a bank card? Can't people just put the money into his bank account
for him and then he can pull money out at a bank machine wherever he is? I realize
that this is much easier in Canada with our bigger centralized banking system, but is
there not a way to do it in the US as well?

there would be, if he were really a US citizen, or if he lived here ... he
is just in the US visiting his father, he is from greenland, so i doubt
there are many ATMs in canada or the USA that are for his back in
greenland...

I deal with Canada Trust in Canada, but I can use any bank machine around the world
that has the Cirrus logo on it, they have agreements between the banks. Back when I
lived in Chicago (2 years ago) I used Harris bank and I could use their bank card at
machines in Canada to take out money. If his father has a US bank account he can
arrange to give the kid a card and let him take out money while he is in Quebec.
Believe it or not, even in the wilds of Canada we have access to bank machines.

Do you mean put money directly into his account?

Folks can't put money into his bank account without knowing his bank number
and that information should not be posted on the internet. An account could
be set up with prior arrangements made between the bank and Maligiaq (and maybe
his father) to accept donations for that account in a specific name such as
"Getting Maligiaq to the Race" (but I don't recommend this name as I've seen
Maligiaq's name spelled about four different ways, now :-) with checks made out
to that name and addressed to the bank. The bank will handle the deposits.

Or they could be sent to Maligiaq's father to make the deposits.

Maligiaq should then be able to make withdrawals at any ATM machine in the US
(or Canada, too, I would guess).

Cheers,

Jackie

I've always gotten the card instantly at the bank, even in the US we never had to
wait.

except from his situation, money wouldn't get to geno until this week,
and if he has to start an account, you've got all that to deal with...
then he has to send the card out... it may take until the race is over.

just thinking out loud...
