This from the phycotoxins list. Shall I stop forwarding these?

Subject: PHYCOTOXINS: Red Tides in Florida

More from CRS:

In mid-October 1999, red tides were reported in a fourth area along the
Atlantic Coast of central FL. Meanwhile, the bloom off southwest FL
was reported to be diminishing. Several panhandle counties have been
designated economic injury disaster areas due to the red tide.

do the articles suggest a cause of the red tides?

Hi Larry, I just send them as they appear. But the causes of algae blooms
are basically what you would expect: Favorable conditions for
multiplication of the l'il critters. Warmer water, lots of nutrients,
minerals they like. Algae blooms, and especially HAB's (harmful algae
blooms) have increased a lot in recent years globally. Usually this is
attributed to global warming affecting the coasts, where they are located,
runoff of fertilizers, etc.

HAB's have caused major kills of wild and farmed fish, kills of birds,
manatees, seals, and of course illness or death of people through
consumption of accumulated toxins in shellfish, mostly. Major categories:
DSP, ASP, PSP ( diarrhetic, amnesic, paralytic shellfish poisoning),
ciguatera, and the new kids on the block, Pfiesteria and relatives.
HAB's of hepatotoxic freshwater cyanobacteria ("blue-green algae") are
also increasing. In many cases, toxin production seems to be associated
with, and maybe caused by, bacteria living in close relationship with the
algae. That may explain why some species of algae have gotten to be toxic,
or more toxic, than they had been, and why "new" toxins continue to be
discovered. The capacity of bacteria for rapid evolution is marvelous to
behold. e

'Although coastal pollution has enhanced red tide blooms in other areas of
the world, the Florida red tides represent a natural process not caused by
pollution. These blooms serve a purpose in the ecology of Florida Gulf
coastal regions. Our responsibility is to understand the purpose and
function of red tides, directing our efforts toward alleviating the adverse
effects without causing further ecological damage. '

does this website offer a realistic view of florida red tides?

guess i need to read more about this subject.

bye bye bliven

I just looked at it. Seems OK. Bear in mind that while Gymnodinium breve
is the usual culprit around here, there are LOTS of other species involved
in HAB's. Fla. has had red tides since at least as far back as 1844, so we
can't blame pollution here. One theory was that red tides occurred when
the freshwater inflow to the Gulf was between certain limits. I don't know
how well that one has checked out. My own interest has been more in
shipping ballast water transfer of foreign species, because of my
involvement in an environmental brouhaha in NW Scotland (proposed major
coastal superquarry in my neighborhood). I'm not a marine biologist. e

yup it does and it also stinks but after a couple hours away or in air
condition it should stop bothering you. Ours in NE Fla is just about gone
thanks to Irene.

That's the Mote Marine Laboratory. I would guess it would be fairly
realistic :-)

You might check out the GASP website on red tide which has several
links to info about red tide, what it is and its impact on the
environment and humans as well as red tide up-dates at

http://www.gasp-seakayak.net/red-tide.html

hi Elaine and Jackie,

thanks for the explanation and links.

red tide stuff as a function of local/global human activity,
weather&climate, and rapid evolution should keep me reading for quite a
while....
