One thought for a Portland area PaddleWise gathering; The Columbia River Paddle Festival will be held this April 15th & 16th at Vancouver Washington's Marine Park, which is just over the Columbia River from Portland. We could schedule a PaddleWiser's Picnic, or even a paddle. The best time for such a gathering would be sometime after the food vendor shuts down in the afternoon, either Saturday or Sunday! This will be a fun event, with lots of boat demos, classes, and equipment vendors. It's sponsored by Alder Creek Kayak, and it's all free. Anyone interested? Dave Seng said, " it's part of the evolution of the kayaker - our bodies sense over time the need to lower the center of gravity from the shoulders to the waist and thus provide better stability and safety." Which is why we all actually *do* look like Arnold --- in mid-roll. Does anyone know if the sea kayak symposium still takes place around the Chesapeake. I've come across a web site from last year or a year or so ago, but I can't find anything saying if there is one this year. It'd be a great place to get together with area PaddleWisers. Here's what I send to Jack Martin about the event, which is purely my version: The dates are April 14-16. I've been haunting the Charleston Parks & Rec web site (http://www.chascoparks.com/), but they don't have anything posted yet. You might stop by there and sign up for their quarterly flyer. I kinda hate to get all that paper that I end up throwing away, though. Based on my experiences from 1998, I'd suggest pre-registering and signing up for courses ahead of time, especially for the on-water courses with big-name folks like Derek and Nigel, but you can register and sign up for stuff on the spot. The sign-up form they sent in the mail was not intuitive, so we didn't sign up for anything in advance. The park has a nice campground, and you can pitch a tent on grass. I'm bringing a bike, as it's a long walk to the dining hall. Tons of demo boats. Not much in the way of sales, except for accessories. Great classes, on and off water. Early morning cruises every day, at least one featuring a surf exit/entry. Oh, it's sand flea mating season. Bring long pants, socks (I'm not embarrassed to wear Tevas and socks), and Skin-so-soft. I think we can manage the logistics, if you can manage the trip.. Joan > > Sounds like a plan, even to a cityphobe like me. Do you think you > can > work out accomodations and boat security?
