but most states have their own regulations.  New Jersey now requires a red
flag if the thing extends more than 4 feet., for example.  Maryland, the
last time I checked, was more like 2 feet.
        FWIW,  Maryland also limits rack width to lane width, whereas NJ
says rack extensions can be no more than half again the vehicle width.
