I used 5200 fast set (24 Hours) and noticed I was able to peel the old stuff
off the hull when I re-glued my foam foot rests. Is this stuff less adhesive
then the regular 5200?

Hi Bob,

I'm not qualified to make a knowledgeable comment on the fast-set stuff -
I've never used it. I can say that the times that I've used 5200 it has
appeared to be _permanent_ . In general, most fast-set adhesives are not
as effective as their slower curing relatives. (OK guys, I'm a wide open
target for making that statement) As when using just about any adhesive, I
think that the surface preparation is the most important factor in the
ultimate effectiveness of the joint.

Ditto here, except that I **have** used the fast-set 5200 to attach D-ring
holders (PVC) to the inside of the hull of my fiberglass yaks, and that stuff
is also permanent. I use 80-grit to roughen both surfaces, and a clean acetone
swab to remove any oils (etc.).

Bob, if the foam is delaminating from your hull after adhering with 5200, I bet
the failure is in the foam, not the 5200.

Ooops! I did not read your post carefully before I initially responded, Bob.
So the 5200 is losing its bond to the fiberglass? Do I have that right?

If so, I suspect surface preparation is the culprit. Even the fast-set stuff
is incredibly adherent, in my experience.

The failure was partly the original hydrogrip which then increased the
stress on the remaining foam which split. I reglued the foam to the hull and
also repaired the split. It seems pretty secure now. I'm going to give it a
workout after work.. If it fails again, I'll opt for the pegs.

I was surprised, but yes, I was able to peel the old 5200 off the hull. I
had cleaned it with acetone and roughed it up with 80 grit.
