Robert Cline asked about what belongs in a expedition boat repair kit. Bill
Hansen replied with this list:

Denzo tape
duct tape
18 gauge steel wire
two wire clamps
two small hose clamps
about 50 feet of strong string
an epoxy "ding stick" which will set up in cold/wet conditions
a small kit of 6 oz glass cloth, epoxy & catalyst, latex gloves etc
sailmakers' needles, a little plastic "pusher" for the needles, dental floss
as the "thread"
a cheap imitaion of a "Leatherman" multi-purpose tool
hacksaw blade broken in half
good sharp knife

I curious what others would add to the list.

I have not paddled my kayak in wilderness where my survival would depend on
my being able to fix forseeable damage to my boat. When I paddled into the
BWCAW in canoes I was young invulnerable and able to repair the damage that
I did to one boat with pine pitch and birch bark.

As a rudder addicted kayaker I would add a spare rudder cable and repair
hardware. I wonder as I write if my Kelty Triptease guyline would work as
an emergency rudder cable.

I would also add a small vice grip pliers.

Questions:

How much 6 ox. glass cloth and resin etc is a small kit? 2 square feet, 1
sq. yard?
Resin to fill the weave or enough for multiple coats?
Other hardware, stainless steel nuts and bolts, foot pedal components?

How much stuff is enough?

Dana

I haven't gone shopping to fill out my expedition repair kit, but I believe
they make glass cloth in rolls. You can get a small roll to carry along
with you.

When I pack I ask the fundamental question of what am I MOST likely to need
and what do I KNOW how to use. I'd be about clueless about cloth and resin.
If my life depended on it I'd learn BEFORE I went out but I'm MUCH more
likely to need the duct tape, 3 flashlights, extra power bars and dental
floss I carry. Don't laugh. I repaired a broken, or just about broken paddle
with it. Simple thing like safety pins, sand paper (for broken fingernails as
well as splinters in the Greenland paddles), space blanket, even in the
90-100 degree heat is good. It can be a REFLECTIVE tent that will stay cooler
than hotter if needed.
Nothing that doesn't have at least either calories or 2 uses comes with
us. I play with how many things I can do with dental floss or even the light
sticks. I have yet to get to 3 on that one but I'm still playing with it. 2
plastic garbage bags, that I can come up with about 15 uses for. Work on it.
It's a fun project if you are waiting for your computer to reboot.
I have decided I've reached my limit of STUFF. I'll spare you all the
ENTIRE list because it is really long but fits in one, little drybag that
hefts in at about 7+ pounds. But I'll bet under the circumstances I paddle in
I could last until I went nuts from not getting a shower in unsalted water.
Put I just ordered extra pegs from Current Designs. Can't decide if I carry
one or not. Ain't small.8^(. I think I've reached the point where if I add
something I have to take something away. Humm, I need to go sort the bag
again . . .

For 10 bucks or so you can get a trial kit from system three that has a ton
of stuff that you could pick and chose from. They also give you a
certificate for 10 bucks of your next purchase so you cant beat the deal.
