Somebody mentioned searching for a good packable pillow. It
ain't a big fluffy eiderdown, but the little
horseshoe-shaped inflatable you find in airports and travel
stores works well for me.

How about an paddlefloat stuffed inside a pile shirt. It gives you a daily
check that the float doesn't leak.

This is as good a time as any to bring up Audrey Sutherland's dictum
that everything you bring camping be able to serve at least 3 purposes.
I don't have her book, Paddling In Paradise, in which I believe this is
mentioned. And while I once did listen to her lecture/demonstrate at LL
Bean years ago, outdoors under a tree, I must admit that I was so
intoxicated by her that her words were lost. An amazing person!!!

If anyone has notes from her lecture or other source, please share some
of the triple duty stuff she carries.

On Bill's point, the paddle float could serve three purposes: as a
paddlefloat: as a camp seat; and as a tent pillow. You could even make
a fourth duty: I know some people who use a paddlefloat as a lumbar
support while paddling. A fifth duty: use it as a football for beach
play. Lest I get a bunch of lectures about not monkeying with an item
that is a safety device...yes, I know, I know.

So, let's here your triple duty item thoughts.

One thing you have to remember with anything that is inflatable, paddle
float, thermarest matress fixed in a chair, if you are around a camp fire
it could get a spark on it and you are out a item till it is fixed

On the pillow thing - my sleeping bag stuff sack, filled with appropriate
choice of clothes for desired stiffness works quite well.

Another double duty item, that I have enjoyed - is my PWS kayak seat that
is a single unit that can be removed from the kayak and used as a
beach/camping seat - works for me.

Since Audrey uses a foil bag from a box-o-wine for the paddlefloat/camp
seat/pillow/lumbar support the original contents of the bag serves a
purpose as well.

Although any paddle float should be well made, and it's nice to be
resourceful, I do still question the wisdom of using a possibly
essential piece of safety equipment so freely for other uses. Though
they may seem quite harmless, accidents do happen, and I'd hate to be
without a paddle float just because of something that happened to it
while it was being used for something unrelated to it's primary
purpose. The more things it's used for, the more possibilities exist
for it to be somehow damaged.

So far, I haven't had to use mine in an actual emergency, but I don't
doubt that someday I will. I do test it regularly to make sure it's
sound, but other than that, I don't use it for anything else.
Besides, Taking along a warm and comfy fleece pillow case that can be
filled with a piece of warm clothing is far more comfortable, and
doesn't really take up any real space, or weigh enough to be of any
concern.

just my $0.27 (inflation, plus tax)

I raised this very same point about using a paddle float or any rescue
stuff for anything but its intended purpose, i.e. safety.

Looking back at my statement about this plus my suggestions about using
a paddle float for a whole lot of other purposes, I think it is best to
remove vital safety devices from gear serving double or triple duty.

A related issue, sitting on your PFD. While innocuous enough, sitting
on one will eventually break down the foam and lead to an early demise
in the vital flotation. Also wear and tear on the nylon or cordura
covering material.

Rock climbers carefully take care of their climbing ropes. They don't
use them to play tug-of-war, tie down ladders to their car roofs etc.

We should be doing the same with PFDs and paddle floats and tow ropes,
among other things. For example, I have a set of lights that I have
with me for night paddling. I tend not to count them in the inventory
of camping lights, i.e. I have sets for both. Of course, if need a
light for seeing something and don't have another light around, I will
use one of the ones from my kayaking lighting system.

The only two I remember are the foil wine bladder, and a condom.

Condom usage - turniquet, small water flask, band for a slingshot.

I think my response to Kirk will be with a comment of Rick S.'s.

My favorite pieces of "triple duty" gear are as follows:

   a. a hammock -good for (1) morning nap (2) afternoon nap (3)
after supper nap   8->
   b. an aluminum 10 inch Dutch Oven -good for (1) breakfast (2)
dinner (3) supper      8-> 8->
   c. a large capacity wine caddy -good for (1) cooking (2) drinking
(3) star gazing        8-> 8-> 8->

Sorry for all the nonsense, but this has turned into a much too long day

I use a small dry bag, which is normally stuffed with my "emergency" dry
clothing for use if I get stuck somewhere while paddling on a day trip, and
slide a 100-weight fleece top over it for a pillow slip. This makes for a
**very** firm pillow, perhaps not what most people want. The main advantage is
that nothing extra is needed, and it is a unit that never gets disturbed under
normal circumstances.

What's in my "emergency" dry clothes bag? Glad you asked: fleece top, fleece
pants (both 100 weight), rain pants, fleece hat, and a bug hat. Do not need
rain jacket, 'cause my paddle jacket is waterproof. Do not need a rain hat,
'cause that's in the cockpit, also.

I've always used either a paddle float (inflated about half way) or a dry
bag that house clothing, which is normally in the tent taking up room
anyway.

I use a $2.50 Wal-Mart travel pillow and a $2.50 Wal-Mart travel pillowcase. A little large, but more comfy than my tiny packable Slumberjack pillow.

I use the sleeping bag cover, stuffed with some clothes (polar fleece jacket
for comfort) and the paddle float. By adding or letting out air in the
float, you can control the hardness - size of the pillow. More comfortable
then the one I use at home - or is it because more exhausted when touring?

I purchased a pillow from Campmor which has an inflatable center covered
with foam and a fleece outer covering. It packs small and is VERY
comfortable. In Florida, we don't travel with any soft stuff to fill a dry
bag.
