I want to add deck lines to my plastic decklineless boat. I will probably use 6mm nylon kermantle (rock climbers rope). My problem is the clips. Where can I get them? My boat is by Perception. Perception told me they won't sell them to me, and to get them locally. West Marine had something good for about a 3/8" line, but nothing smaller. Any ideas? If not, I'm going to have to go back to Perception and hound them till they send me some clips. Would any other manufacturers sell some clips to me. They need to be surface mount, not in a recess.

Try to find a store that sells Kajak Sport products. They sell deck line clips that should work for you. You may have to get the store ot order them, but they are available.

Hi Tom,

I'm not sure exactly what you mean by *clips*. Do you mean the
little nylon pad-eyes? (the little loops that bungies are often
threaded through on deck). Or do you mean something more like a
biner arrangement for doubling up lengths of line? Are you wanting
to install perimeter lines? Tow lines? Or bungie rigging fore and
aft for things like holding charts, deck bags, securing paddle
floats, etc.?

In any case, I know of at least one place you could order most
miscellaneous hardware items from online - they're in Seattle.
Northwest Outdoor Center (NWOC). Their web site is:
http://www.nwoc.com (I'm not affiliated with them in any way -
except that I've bought a lot of gear from them).

Good luck!

Melissa

I bought some of these nylon pad-eyes at a local marine shop. They had a
few of them in white but not enough to complete my Northbay so I got a
bunch of blacks ones that come in little 4 packs. Some people might think
it's a bit too thin but I used parachute cord for the deckline itselt and
bought it at a outdoor store for about $6 for a 50' length.

NOC sells little P-shaped fittings that are used to hold flotation
rigging in WW canoes. I used some to extend the deck rigging on my Sea
Lion.

NOC's go for about $0.75 each. Home Depot sells the same piece of
equipment to be used to hold electric wire for about a dime. Your call.

One good source in the Chesapeake Bay area for any kind of specialized hardware is Annapolis Performance Sailing (www.apsltd.com). Their web site is a bit of a kluge at the moment, but there's info and a toll free number to call. Nice folks, good stuff --- aimed at the racing sailboat market, which is a nice segment in Annapolis --- but I've found a lot of good read-across equipment there. Good luck. --- Then, there's always Defender Marine. Used to be in New Rochelle, not too far from Brooklyn, now in Connecticut somewhere. Again, anything you can imagine for boats, only a wider market segment.

 Tom,
I believe the problem is that Perception will not sell directly to you.
You can purchase from a Perception dealer.
     Is this correct?

The padeye clips sold in marine stores are identical to those installed on
many boats at the factory. I wouldn't use robe that too small in diameter,
as you will hurt your hand in rough conditions. I have used braided polypro
rope in the past. It has a little stretch which can be a benefit.

Tom: remember that these lines are for rescues -- someone who is as heavy
as you, or even heavier, will be holding these lines as he/she tries to
hoist body and soul onto the deck. Also, these lines might be used for
towing. Given the intended use, be sure that the deck fittings you use are
up to the stress. Seems to me the fittings that Steve referred to might be
too weak.

I would not recommend nylon kernmantle line. It will stretch
considerably when wet. Stick with polyester. The stuff in
the marine shops is available in the same bright colors as
the climbing stuff.

Bob's point is well taken. My boat has been endoed with someone holding
the line near the clip, but that's only one data point. I think I'll try
to do a failure test on a couple of them. Of course, I'm no engineer.
