Doug, sorry I was away for a few days. I'd like to go as soon as I get a new
tent. Which is a segue to Last Call for tent likes/dislikes,
complaints/raves before I try to get it all together for the web site.
Thanks very much to all of you who responded. I never cease to be impressed
by the thoughtfulness and the willingness to help one another among the
paddlewisers. To those who haven't responded to the tent info question,
think of doing so as a nice respite from the ethics controversy raging.

Hank

Thank you, thank you, thank you.... I printed them all and was
procrastinating weeding through them in an attempt to make some sort of
spreadsheet or point system to figure out what to buy for the specific type
of camping I'll be doing. Be sure to let us know when it's ready.

One thing I like about my North Face tent is that it comes with an optional
overhead "loft" that is triangular in shape, and netted. It is a great place to
dry out stuff, etc., and doesn't impede too badly up high in the dome. I also
like my "footprint" propriety tent ground sheet that fits perfectly under the
tent. I back it up with a "real" space blanket if the terrain is poor or sharp. I
also use the space blanket for loading the kayak from muddy or sandy terrain. If
you paddle in cold, wet climates, be sure whatever fastening devices/buckles,
etc., are easy to use. This sort of problem is not apparent in the showroom.

Last call, eh? So when do you want to go for a beer? (Canadian of course, and
yes, I will bore you to death with tales of big waves (as opposed to Malissa with
big whales :-) )..

Well... some people have "ethical" concerns about the obtrusive day-glo
orange /yellow color of the NF VE-25, but it sure makes the tent easy to
see ("find") while wandering around on the tundra, muttering to yourself,
"I'm sure my camp is just over that next little hill". If you have ever
found yourself muttering such things to yourself on the Barrenground, you be
quite grateful that you bypassed that nice little A-frame in that
"tundra-moss" or "prairie-dun". You also may console yourself that buying
a $500 tent employs more Asian piece-workers at $1.5 USD/hr, than say a $60
Walmart special. (Correct me if I am wrong on this).(LOL)

I like the NF VE-25. I thought it was overkill when I bought it , and when
storm-bound I hate the ghastly jaundiced light inside. (You sit there
wondering if your partner has end-stage liver failure, due to their peculiar
yellow-hue.) The other thing I find unique about this tent... it has so
many tie downs..for the tent, for the fly, and an internal guying system.
Sometimes in the morning, while un-pegging the 30 (?, perhaps an
exaggeration, just maybe) lines, I find myself wondering exactly how bad DID
the weather look last night??)

Know what you mean about the jaundice.

I had always been a Luddite re: color of tents until this last season, when I
acquired a light gray tarp to replace the forest green one I had used for a
couple years -- man! what a difference in light underneath the gray tarp. On
those days when tarp/tent-bound, it sure is nice to have something which lets
in some light.
