Can anyone out there recommend paddling gloves? Keeping warm is not an
issue; in fact, they should be for warm weather paddling. We are concerned
primarily about sun protection. I was thinking thin neoprene or even
lycra. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Josh

The fingerless gloves with the mesh back seem to work fine for me. I've used
them for a couple of years and just get a bit of a tan on the back of my
hands, not enough to worry me. The gloves allow for dexterity with protection
for everything but the fingertips. The thumb is fully covered.

I use diving gloves made of thin cloth with a little rubberized coating.
I think the SCUBA folks call them reef gloves. Just a thin layer of
fabric between you and the world, and grippy on the outside. They cost
about $4 around here.

Since I am very allergic to the sun, my hands (and other parts) must always
be covered. I have been very happy with the gloves (#3910) from Sun
Precautions (800) 882-7860; <http://www.sunprecautions.com>. They are
somewhat pricey $35.95 but very thin imitation leather that are easy to slip
on, light and snug fitting.

I would think that the warm water gloves skin divers use would work
well. I know Dacor makes a warm water diving glove. Also check out the
2mm neoprene warm water gloves listed on this
page...http://www.diverdiscount.com/divinggloves.html.

Good luck,
Mark

Sailors' gloves work well, as well. You can get fingerless gloves with a
pleather palm for grip, and you can get the same with fingers. Gives some UV
protection to the back of the hand. Gill (UK) makes excellent gloves ---
seem to be the glove of choice in the sailing community in Annapolis,
Maryland, where, in summer, you can almost walk across the harbor by hopping
across sailboat decks. Big sailboat decks.

Paddling the humid warm air temperatures (90~100 degrees plus) and warm water
temperature (over 70 degrees F) of the Chesapeake Bay during the summer months,
sometimes touring sunrise to near sunset, I have done a lot of searching for
highly breathable, ultra comfortable, balanced grip sun protection for the hands.

The best product I've found so far (by far) are full finger Ground Force (Mtn.)
Biking gloves from Specialized with mesh backs (hand & fingers), Amura (? - fake
suede) grip area with a more hardened leather area running from the index finger
to thumb which provides good slide and wear resistance. I usually pick up a
couple pairs at a time while on sale under $ 10 / pair from biking mail order
catalogues. In store I think they run about $ 12~13 a pair. They're comfortable
down to about 65 degree water temp. and 55 degree air temp. And they wear like
iron, but I keep losing mine to the Bay during on-water breaks. As they offer
better grip, feel, and slide than bare hands and all other hand wear tried thus
far, they are my first choice for surf, storm, and general hurricane paddling.
One more added bonus - they have a leather strip across the knuckles to help 'em
wear better when knuckling off of pilings, seawalls, reef and freighters.

No ties to the company, yada, yada,

Vince

I bought their shirt, pants and hat last year. Really good stuff, works
well and it's nice and light. Part of my standard summer paddling gear now.

I really like the finger-less NRS paddling gloves. I think they are
around $15 US. They are basically the same thing as biking gloves,
but designed for kayaking. I use gloves off and on in warm weather.
Basically, my hands will say, this blisters hurts wear gloves, then I
do. I haven't noticed a difference in performance. Strangely, I feel
like I have a more powerful grip when I wear neo gloves in the
winter. Like, maybe I'm a superhero or something.

Hi Josh,

>Can anyone out there recommend paddling gloves?

In New Zealand we are particulary susceptable to sun burning. One of our
kayaking shops has fingerless gloves made of thin neoprene that only cover
the tops of the hands. It is secured to your hand with small loops that
your fingers and thumb go through. (You end up looking like you have webbed
frog feet with them on). This method means that your palms and fingers are
in direct contact with the paddle shaft, for better control as some would say.

They sell for NZ$27.00 each (approx US$14.00)

Hope this helps.
