I don't really use a hip snap. I start to put the boat under me as I initiate
the sweep and then a tiny humph at the end to finish the project.

Actually, I'm not failing to roll up. It is just so much harder. I seem
to have to put so much more effort into it. If I don't I find I am sculling
up the last bit instead of getting the boat under me, as I normally would.
Hummm, this sounds like a failure of the tad of a snap at the end. I
might be trying too hard and when I go to make that last move up with my
lower leg I'm so hard against the thigh pad I have nothing left to push with.
Then I find I'm pushing myself up with the paddle because I'm unable to let
the pressure off my left for fear of rolling back down. This sculling
business is fine in the pool but it won't work with the slightest chop in
real water. I'll have to see what is going on next time I try the GS.
Thanks, this is giving me a lot to think about.

Joan

If you think that you're "trying harder" when rolling the gulfstream
you might also be unconsciously raising your head more. Get someone
to watch you roll each boat and see if they can see any differences.
It sounds like slowing down the roll might help though.

In another response, you mentioned that you run out of breath when
practicing some of the underwater tricks when rolling the Breeze.
>From what I've read, if you take 3 deep breaths (the optimal number)
before going over, you should have a little more oxygen to work with.

John

I have been paddling a Gulfstream for three years and experienced similar
rolling problems until I had a friend watch my head carefully. I roll up on
the right side and found that "locking" my head to my right shoulder made
all the difference. Letting the boat bring my head up solved my problem.
This is not an uncommon problem I'm told. Prior to the Gulfstream I paddled
a Valley Skerray (glass) and I find the Gulfstream superior in many ways,
including rolls. Please note that my roll is far from bombproof.
Cheers
Bill Wetzel
