AFAIK, Subaru uses relabeled Yakima accessories, or is there just queer
coincidence that they look uncannily alike?! Suby might have some
special adaptors for the Double Crosses, or a specially designed
Double Cross for their racks.

By the way, I just bought a new (to me) 1994 Subaru Legacy sedan.
(Well, technically, my wife bought one, but I hope to be allowed to
haul boats on it) Does anyone know if my 1A Raingutter mounts will
work with it, or do I need to get Q-Towers?

Good luck,
Shawn

For whatever it's worth, my '97 Outback --- which isn't much different from
the newest editions --- took stock DoubleCross mounts, and handled a heavy
load well. Can't imagine how they wouldn't work on current Subies. Solid as
a rock at 80 mph with two kayaks and a bike. Tied down, of course .....

Thanks to all who responded about getting the Yakima on my new
wonderful Subaru (with 270 miles of local driving in 4 days) -- the
trick to getting the mounts on was actually to insert the bars first.
Yakima had suggested that I be sure to take the bars out, but the
only way I could do it was with them in. Even then it took a bit of
angling and gentle pushing. Anyway, it's on -- my rollers are on, my
cradles are on and my ski rack is on. Hooray. Now to have some
fun.....

I had good luck with http://rackwarehouse.com/. They were far more
knowledgeable than my local shops and cheaper too
(no affiliation). My 1995 Subaru legacy has a gutterless front mount and a
back bar mounted on the stock Subaru rack ( Double Cross mount). Yakima
calls this setup the Hybrid. The front gutterless bar is rated at twice the
load capacity as a gutter mounted bar is. This gives me a wider spread
between bars. A pair of Double Crosses will also work but will narrow the
spread and be weaker. The Hybrid system tilts the load so that it faces
slightly downward into the wind which I believe provides better stability.
Also, the gutterless front bar can be removed in 30 sec, when not in use as
wind noise may be a problem with round bars.
