I bought a couple of the plastic or rubber drip rings that have a
lip or ridge where the ring meets the paddle (see my attempt at
ASCII drawing below).  I cut the drip ring so that it could be
opened and fitted around the paddle shaft.  I then looped a thin
wire or plastic tie around the lip to hold the split ring together
on the shaft.  In the diagram, the drip ring is open the the
left.  The ** are supposed to represent the wire wrapped around
the shaft.  The short vertical lines at the narrowest part are
supposed to represent the lip or ridge, although of course they
wouldn't be long enough to dig into the shaft as my drawing shows.
I am not as good at ASCII drawing as your list mom is!
