Hi, I've been trying to find Greenland paddling style instructional videos without success. There is one listed in the Great river outfitters catalog, [by Doug Van Doren] but they say it is no longer available. I have found the rolling videos [John Heath] as well as a fair amount of text on the internet. Is there anything else out there? Any sources for the Doug Van Doren video? Thanks for any help. Doug Van Doren also puts out a good video. (Assuming that John Heath and the Maligiaq Padilla video has already been discussed.) David, Try Betsie Bay Kayak (see: http://www.betsiebaykayak.com ). They offer Doug Van Doren's video and he uses their boat in the video; a mutually agreeable arrangement. I have one of their Greenland paddles and use it with my Khatsalano-S. >Hi, I've been trying to find Greenland paddling style instructional >videos without success. SNIP David, Other than John Heath's videos and Doug Van Doren's video, there isn't much out there at the moment. I imagine that this will change over the next few years. John Heath's older "Qajaq Klubben" video, narrated in Greenlandic, provides excellent footage of Greenlanders performing forward strokes, students learning to roll and Manasse Mathaeussen performing advanced rolls. This excellent video is often overlooked. There is a rough, "home-grown" video that documents Maligiaq's first appearance in the U.S., including rolls and rope gymnastics, by Marilyn Vogel. Details are available at <http://www.magicnet.net/~gstamer/QK.html>. Gail Ferris has several videos from her travels to Greenland at http://www.guillemot-kayaks.com/Trips/Gail/GailsVideos.html. I've received word that highlights from the excellent footage of last year's Greenland championship may be made available to the public through KNR TV/Radio (Greenland). I'll post an update when I receive more news. Van Doren's video is available from Betsie Bay Kayak <http://www.betsiebaykayak.com/Accessories.html>. Doug is an excellent paddler and his stroke method is quite different than what Greenlanders Maligiaq Padilla and Kaleraq Bech have been teaching in the U.S. Although I prefer the "canted stroke" (top edge of paddle tilted forward), there is no one "proper" Greenland technique, and variations flourish. While it is not specifically about greenland style paddling, Jay Babina has put together a video about sea kayak rolling which uses Greenland style techniques as the instruction method. It is a good video for anyone trying to learn to roll with any kind of paddle. You can get more info from Jay at jbabina_at_snet.net Nick At 9:21 AM -0400 6/22/01, Greg Stamer wrote: >>Hi, I've been trying to find Greenland paddling style instructional >>videos without success. >SNIP > >David, > >Other than John Heath's videos and Doug Van Doren's video, there >isn't much out there at the moment.
