Craig said: "A prominent B.C. kayaking instructor and whitewater guide known to many as "Purple" Hayes died Thursday while kayaking on the Chilliwack River." A link to the updated article: http://www.vancouversun.com/ ---------------- Craig, I couldn't bring up your link to the death piece, as the news clips change daily. One of the links I had (and I'm not sure how different the info was from the Sun) can be found at: <http://www2.mybc.com/news/fs.cfm?id=882016> Like I said earlier, I'd never river paddle solo. Wavelength just released their latest issue, and chose to focus on "Inner Waters", which includes material covering whitewater kayaking. The deceased paddler, Rick Hayes, had an article in the current issue about kayaking the Chilliwack River. The article stated: "Never paddle alone". He closes the article by saying, "Who knows, maybe I'll see you out on the river some day -- make that the Chilliwack River!" A tragic death. On a happier note, PW'er Shawn Baker has a nice "fresh" piece on paddling on Flathead Lake in the current issue. And Ralph Hoehn has a neat perspective on "Folding Kayaks on Inner Waters." There is also a well written piece about paddling Skookumchuck Narrows (not for the faint at heart). BTW anyone out there in kayak land, in a couple of weeks are some huge tides here in the PNW. Anyone wanting to run any salt chuck rapids? *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s). Makes you worried when you are a kayaker and diabetic too! Any other type II diabetic kayakers out there. What precautions do you take on the water? I tend to go severe hypo glycemic after 2-3 hours of paddling. Real problem. I've had a lot of clients who are diabetic. On day rafting trips they commonly wouldn't say anything, just kind of slide into a less active state. Usually a relative would tell us and we would get to the cars more quickly. Once, while on the Middle Fork of the Salmon, one kayaker insisted on stopping to eat quite often. This was ok until one time we were floating through a forest fire and had been told not to stop due to falling rocks. That time I wondered if the person on the raft couldn't give him a sandwich while floating as it was flat. On longer sea kayaking trips (and ww) people carry their kits with them in the boat, plus extra food. I suppose it would be good for someone else to have glucosamine? Then others can help by squirting it in the mouth if need be? If the person is not responding, squirting it under the tongue will get some of it absorbed into the bloodstream without risk of going down the wrong tubes. Later, a few saltines can also do a good job. They can get soggy, of course... These are standard in the first aid kits carried by AMC trips in the NY-NJ area. Sometimes glucosamine as well but according to the MDs in the club ingesting a little sugar in these amounts is not going to create a problem -- and it's cheaper. *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s). There's about 19 gm in each which can be squeezed under the tongue. They stay sealed and waterproof until the cap is twisted off. I've also used the GU gel type packets sold in some outdoor stores, or the PowerBar version. I can generally tell when things are beginning to go, and I take action immediately -- it takes 5 - 10 minutes for me to get back up to snuff. It's not an uncommon problem nowadays.. I know of a few others in this area with Type II and some Type I as well... It's a good idea to be aware of them so you can deal with it should a problem occur. I've gotten a little hypoglycemic on the water a couple of times, never anything too serious as I usually get plenty of warning. I always carry glucose tablets and they've proved adequate. The people I paddle regularly with know that I'm type II and could have a problem; and when I've gone on longer trips with a group I've given then a quick briefing. -- Wes --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Wes Boyd's Kayak Place http://www2.dmci.net/wesboyd/kayak.htm Kayaks for Big Guys (And Gals) | Trip Reports | Places To Go | Boats & Gear --------------------------------------------------------------------------- *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s). I can't get back to the article I posted either. The link I posted was an updated article that featured more detail, particularly about who Rick Hayes was and his influence on river kayakers in the BC area and beyond. Key points: 1) The death was ruled a drowning. 2) Friends thought it suspicious that he would kayak alone. 3) He was diabetic. 4) The death was still under investigation. My memory is a bit fuzzy; someone correct me if I'm wrong.
